TREATMENT PLANT MECHANIC - WATER PRODUCTION

TREATMENT PLANT MECHANIC

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

DEFINITION

To perform preventative maintenance and make minor and major mechanical repairs to treatment plant or related plant equipment, including distribution pumps and motors, and wells; and to perform a variety of technical and mechanical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Treatment Plant Superintendent and Senior Mechanic.

ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions
:

  • Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical difficulties on a variety of equipment at the water and wastewater treatment plants.
  • Performance preventative maintenance functions on pumps, wells, valves, and feeders including greasing and oiling, and checking packing.
  • Use and operate tools, material and equipment needed to maintain and repair treatment plant and electric plant equipment.
  • Adhere to standard safety precautions.
  • Must have acceptable attendance and the ability to work well with people.
  • Any specific requirements that are specified in the "letter of employment offer".
  • Safety for oneself and others is a primary responsibility of every employee.

Marginal Functions:

  • Serve as relief operator; check pumps and gauges; record readings.
  • Perform maintenance functions duties on plant and grounds, including building maintenance, mowing the grass, weed eating and other maintenance functions.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of
:

  • Tools, material and equipment needed to maintain and repair equipment.
  • Methods and techniques of preventative maintenance related to equipment and machinery.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.

Required Skills and

Competencies:

  • Perform repairs and preventative maintenance on plant equipment.
  • Operate a variety of plant maintenance and repair equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the
  • course of work.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
    • Walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time
    • Operating assigned equipment.
  • Maintain effective audio‑visual discrimination and perception needed for:
    • Making observations
    • Communicating with others
    • Operating assigned equipment.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

  • Two years of increasingly responsible mechanical maintenance and repair experience.

Training:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

License or Certificate:

  • Must possess an appropriate, valid driver's license at the time of hire date.
  • Must possess a valid Water and Wastewater Operator License "D" and higher issued by the Oklahoma State Health Department within 3 months of hire date.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environmental Conditions:

  • Water and wastewater treatment plant or electric plant environment; confined spaces; exposure to noise, grease, and oils.

Physical Conditions:

  • Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing, stooping, lifting, carrying or climbing for prolonged periods of time.
