Assistant Bakery Manager

Purpose Statement

To maximize sales and profit in the Bakery Department through courteous customer service while maintaining optimum department conditions. Under supervision of the Store Manager and Co‑Manager, and Bakery Manager with a dotted line relationship to the Bakery/Deli Specialist, the Assistant Bakery Manager assists the Store Manager in the overall execution of all company programs and procedures required in running a Bakery Department, including direct duties and responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create an environment that enables customers to feel welcomed and appreciated by answering all questions regarding products sold in the department and throughout the store.
  • By personal example, constantly reinforce company philosophy, policies, and procedures.
  • Maximize departmental sales and profit by ensuring a friendly, well‑trained, customer‑responsive workforce that is highly visible on the sales floor.
  • Work closely with the company bakery/deli department to ensure all programs are followed.
  • Develop as a candidate for promotion to Bakery Manager.
  • Work a rotating shift that includes a mix of night and weekend shifts to provide optimum sales exposure during peak times of the week.
  • Attend shifts and arrive on time; attendance is essential.
  • Review displays for freshness, remove distressed items, rotate all new merchandise, control loss of product and maintain presentation of the bakery department, displays, seasonal areas, and endcaps daily.
  • Work closely with the Bakery Manager and Bakery/Deli Specialist on timely execution of all company merchandise presentation programs and direction.
  • Develop a total department plan by embellishing and blending company merchandising programs together; constantly seek ideas from teammates, customers, competitors, etc., to improve presentation levels.
  • Maintain the bakery department in‑stock; plan event quantities, balance overstocks with district, and ensure inventory tools are properly used and maintained.
  • Control rotation of products, shelf‑life dates, and separation of distressed merchandise; adjust prices to avoid loss.
  • Maintain cleanliness of department and store; develop efficient organization methods for bakery coolers and communicate standards.
  • Maintain technical equipment through daily inspections and cleaning procedures.
  • Work with the Store Manager and Bakery Manager to ensure appropriate staffing; recruit new teammates and use staffing criteria to select the most qualified candidates.
  • Prioritize business needs (truck processing, planograms, price changes, peak sales, sale events) when writing weekly schedules.
  • Monitor and approve all department‑level expenditures; provide recommendations to reduce expenses.
  • Participate in providing sales and controllable expense information during budgeting periods.
  • Communicate store policies, procedures, and programs to teammates; ensure teammates understand their jobs and can complete all tasks and duties while working in the bakery department.
  • Maintain a performance log of attendance and performance issues to aid in fair and equitable evaluations.
  • Handle inventory management from purchases to sales and promotional events; prevent shrink through proper control and documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to help the store achieve the highest possible levels of customer service, sales, productivity, and profitability.
Qualifications – Required
  • Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and ability to count.
  • Able to give and receive complex verbal instructions to and from supervisors, co‑workers, and employees concerning store/department policy, procedures, and use of equipment.
  • Work and educational history demonstrating stability.
  • Ability to read and write English; able to read instructions, merchandise labels, warehouse order codes, numbers, reports, printed paper invoices, and order forms.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills.
Qualifications – Preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience in a related type of job.
  • Prior experience operating a baler, case cutter, cleaning/sanitation equipment, pallet jack, intercom, pricing gun, knife, slicer, scales, cash…
