OverviewPosition is a High School Assistant Coach in the High School Athletic Department.
Reports To:
Head Coach. JD Revision Date: 06/06/2024. Supervises:
Players on their roster. The position is responsible for assisting the head coach with organization of the program, conducting practices, motivating students, and instructing student athletes in game strategies and techniques.
- Organizes and oversees specific program levels or areas of responsibility.
- Work within the head coach’s organizational structure.
- Verify participant registration and eligibility with the head coach and athletic secretary.
- Develop game schedules, practice schedules, facilities use, transportation needs, and the program budget in collaboration with the head coach.
- Communicate and plan practice sessions and competition strategies to support the health and well-being of student participants.
- Attend pre-season parent meetings to review eligibility requirements, athletic code of conduct, team rules, injury prevention, and sport risks.
- Coordinate practice and competition schedules during off-season, summer, and in-season periods with the head coach.
- Oversee level-specific inventory, equipment selection and care.
- Maintain a safe facility and equipment.
- Maintain effective communication with athletes, school administration, staff, students, parents, and the community.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with media, boosters, parents, officials, players, and local programs.
- Collaborate with students, parents, staff, and administration to support student-athletes from varied backgrounds.
- Model sportsmanship and fair play; keep academics as a priority alongside athletic participation.
- Ensure student-athletes meet athletic and academic eligibility requirements and work with teachers/administration accordingly.
- Protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities through precautions and safe practices.
- Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance and plan safe, effective daily practices and events.
- Supervise all students before, during, and after practices and contests; enforce discipline per district policies.
- Collaborate on fundraising activities and maintain accurate financial records per district policy.
- Provide end-of-season records and statistics for individuals and teams.
- Engage with local athletics organizations to support program sustainability and growth.
- Attend applicable orientations and engage in ongoing professional development.
- Other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and/or Athletic Director.
- Proper certification with American Sport Education Program and/or valid Illinois Teaching certificate.
- Pass IHSA required tests and view related training videos.
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
- Knowledge of coaching theory, strategies, and techniques suitable for high school athletes.
- Proven track record of promoting good sportsmanship, academic excellence, positive attitudes, and character.
- Knowledge of techniques and strategies for the sport/activity.
- Ability to handle stressful situations professionally.
- Coaching experience preferred.
- Standing for long periods and occasional walking.
- Ability to perceive sound, vision, depth, and provide oral information; operate sport-related equipment; handle materials safely.
- Work in varied temperatures and weather conditions, indoors and outdoors.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Reviewed annually by Athletic Director & Head Program Coach.
- Employment terms determined by IHSA calendar and school district policy.
- Sport season per IHSA calendar.
- For ETA coaches: renewal possible without reapplication if satisfactory status is maintained.
- For Non-ETA coaches: one-year position; reapplication required each year.
