A Tennessee public high school soccer coach is responsible for managing all aspects of a school's soccer program while operating under the strict athletic and academic guidelines set by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Team Management :
    Coordinate and oversee player tryouts, assess athletic skills, select the final roster, and assign player field positions.
  • Instruction & Development :
    Design detailed practice plans and lead training sessions that focus on soccer fundamentals, advanced tactical strategies, and conditioning.
  • Game Day Operations :
    Direct the team during home and away competitive matches, manage substitutions, and organize field setup and team travel logistics.
  • TSSAA Compliance :
    Ensure all student-athletes meet state eligibility rules, including age, transfer restrictions, and submitting mandatory physical evaluation forms.
  • Academic Monitoring :
    Track player academic performance to ensure the roster maintains the necessary GPA standards to remain

Requirement Details

Education Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED (Non-Faculty);
Bachelor's Degree with a valid TN Teaching License (Faculty).

Mandatory Certifications Completion of the NFHS "Fundamentals of Coaching" course.

TSSAA Classification Categories Under the 2026-27 TSSAA Handbook
, any individual hired into a public high school coaching position must fall into one of four specific regulatory categories:

  • Full-Time Certified Teacher : A board-employed educator with a valid Tennessee teaching license working a minimum of 100 school days.
  • Retired Educator : A retired teacher with five or more years of experience holding a valid state teaching license.
  • Classified Employee :
    An individual working 30+ hours per week for the school system in a non-coaching role (e.g., custodian, aide) who does not require a teaching license. (

    Note:

    As of a 2026 rule update, classified employees are no longer required to take the NFHS First Aid course, but must still complete the Fundamentals course).
  • Non-Faculty Coach : A community member approved by the principal, director of schools, and local school board specifically to coach.
