Job Summary

Responsible to the Associate Director for Recruitment, the Assistant Director for Recruitment serves as a key representative of East Tennessee State University to prospective freshman, transfer, returning, and dual enrollment students. This position provides leadership and supervision to three admissions counselors, including training, coaching, and strategic oversight of assigned recruitment territories. The role supports the development and execution of recruitment strategies, travel planning, outreach initiatives, and communication efforts designed to meet enrollment goals.

In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the Assistant Director manages an assigned recruitment territory and coordinates high school and community college visitation programs, presentations, and outreach events. The position regularly engages with counselors, advisors, administrators, students, and families to promote ETSU and guide prospective students through the admissions process.

This role also serves as a front-line student service provider through in-office admissions counseling, recruitment travel, and ongoing communication with prospective students. In addition, the position oversees the undergraduate residency classification change process, including advising students, reviewing documentation, adjudicating cases, and maintaining accurate records of decisions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to frequently travel to off-site locations as required by the position.
  • Ability to travel during the weekend and overnight.
  • Ability to meet access and security requirements for external sites, including K–12 school systems, which may require presentation of valid identification.
  • Knowledge of university policies, procedures, organizational structure, and student support services.
  • Knowledge of admissions requirements, registration processes, and financial aid and scholarship procedures.
  • Knowledge of current career trends and academic program offerings.
  • Knowledge of promotional materials and resources related to academic and student services at ETSU.
  • Skill in public speaking and delivering effective presentations to individuals and groups.
  • Skill in active listening and asking thoughtful, open-ended questions to assess student needs.
  • Skill in using standard computer applications and the ability to learn new systems and technologies.
  • Ability to travel extensively, including evenings, weekends, overnight, and extended overnight travel.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, and coordinate appointments, events, and information sessions effectively.
  • Ability to follow directions, complete work accurately, and respond constructively to feedback.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, both individually and in group settings.
  • Ability to build relationships with students and families and assist them in identifying programs that align with their personal and career goals.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field, and one to two years of experience in college admissions, sales, outreach, or student organization leadership. Student, part-time, and temporary experience may be considered.
    OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two to three years of experience in college admissions or comparable collegiate or business experience. Student worker, temporary, or graduate assistant experience may be considered.
  • Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, business, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with CRM systems, Banner Student Information System, Microsoft Office, and mobile communication platforms.
  • Working knowledge of East Tennessee State University or another regional rural public institution.
Physical Demands
  • Prolonged standing (e.g., up to 4+ hours)

  • Visual acuity to read printed and electronic materials
