Your Specific ResponsibilitiesThis position spends most of its time in supervisory duties, including communicating with, motivating, training, evaluating employees, planning, directing work, hiring, suspending, rewarding, and disciplining employees. The incumbent develops performance expectations, holds regular performance meetings, completes reviews, maintains schedules, and ensures proper coverage.
Inspection & Staff SupervisionResponsible for supervising inspection staff and ensuring 100% completion of Facility Program Unit inspections per Environmental Health Program Manual DOHM 150-4. Reviews daily activity reports, monthly inspection reports, and conducts ride-along inspections. Provides staff development and training.
Complaint InvestigationsEnsures all complaints related to the Facility Program are investigated within two days of receipt and that public records requests are resolved within department time frames.
Public RelationsActs as subject‑matter expert for media and public information, liaison with local, state, and federal agencies, advises operators and contractors, and represents the department in meetings.
EnforcementRepresents the unit at enforcement meetings and coordinates enforcement procedures; may serve as technical witness in legal matters.
Environmental EpidemiologySupervises staff investigating environmental health aspects of food‑borne illness reports, entering complaints into FLCORS, responding to mold assessments, and providing public education.
Other DutiesPerforms additional duties required by the Division, serves as administrator in the absence of the Environmental Administrator, assists in annual budget preparation, coordinates the Community Sharps Program, serves as assistant building manager, and is the information custodian for assigned information sets.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge: Food hygiene, food and water‑borne pathogens, basic infection control, environmental sampling, media relations, regulations, budgets.
- Skills: Organization, supervision, report writing, flexibility, people management, database use, legal interpretation, media relations, decision making, State of Florida Certification in Food Hygiene.
- Abilities: Conduct site inspections, interpret scientific data, prepare reports, understand applicable rules, engage the public tactfully, work independently, and manage groups.
Minimum:
- A bachelor’s degree in a physical or natural science, environmental health, public health, or engineering.
- Certification as outlined in Florida Statutes 381.0101 for Food Protection.
- At least 30 semester or 40 quarter hours in environmental health, environmental science, or related fields.
Preferred:
- Four years of environmental health duties and two years supervising or leading inspections, training staff, presenting information, and providing feedback.
Emergency Duty: May be required to work before, during, or beyond normal hours during emergencies.
Confidentiality: Access to records containing Social Security numbers.
