The work you will do:
Equipment Operator District One/District Maintenance/Bartow Operations Center This position will perform a variety of roadway maintenance activities on state roads throughout Polk County, including pothole repairs, shoulder work, tree trimming, sidewalk repairs, emergency response, etc. The Equipment Operator supports the safety and functionality of Florida's transportation system through hands-on fieldwork and dependable service.

Annual salary range: $ 38,542.37- $ 49,878.36

Your specific responsibilities:
Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include but not limited to;

dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance;
Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities. Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision. Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs. Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.

The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge of mathematical calculations. Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures. Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools. Skilled in operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles. Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment. Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms. Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.

Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds, stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.

Ability to work independently; stand for an extended period of time.

Other job-related requirements:
Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be "on-call" (24-hour duty) when necessary. Possess a valid Class "E" driver's license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
