Senior Equipment Operator

District One / District Maintenance / Bartow Operations Center

The Work You Will Do

This position will operate and maintain heavy equipment, perform manual labor, and complete daily reports. The incumbent leads and trains crew members while planning work, selecting materials, and maintaining records.
Responsibilities include:

  • Operate vehicles and equipment including road graders, sewer cleaners, and hydraulic excavators.
  • Perform minor maintenance: check fluids, adjust brakes, maintain tire pressure, and clean equipment.
  • Coordinate and direct maintenance activities of assigned crew, including material selection and workload planning.
  • Prepare and maintain daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and vehicle checklists.
  • Perform independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
  • Execute Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Carry out rough carpentry, masonry, painting, and assist with highway sign assembly and erection.
  • Train crew members in heavy equipment operation and Temporary Traffic Control.

Other Job-Related Requirements
  • Respond to emergencies and work on-call as required.
  • Operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) and possess a Class “B” CDL at hire; obtain a Class “A” instructional permit within 60 days and a Class “A” license within 10 months.
  • Obtain and maintain a Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) Intermediate Level certification within one year.
  • Work with or around Department of Corrections inmates; obtain and maintain required training, certification, criminal background check, and other DoC requirements.
  • Be responsive to emergency situations within a short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT).
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalency; or five years of infrastructure construction/maintenance experience (Four years plus one additional year substitutes).
  • Valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Current valid Class B driver license with acceptable driving record according to the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
Driving Record Requirements
  • Three or more moving violations in the past three years with three or more points each.
  • Two convictions of reckless driving in the past three years.
  • License suspension or revocation for moving violations in the past three years.
  • License suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or DUI conviction in past four years.
Pre-Employment Requirements

A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant. Applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse as required. Register for the Clearinghouse.
