• Supervise crews who perform roadway maintenance activities on state roads throughout Polk County, including pothole repairs, shoulder work, tree-trimming, sidewalk repairs, and emergency response.
• Support the safety and functionality of Florida’s transportation system through hands-on fieldwork and dependable service.
• Coordinate and participate in the roadside maintenance program.
• Assist the Maintenance Field Operations Manager in work need surveys by conducting routine highway maintenance inspections.
• Select materials, supplies, equipment, and inspect, plan workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives, and time utilization for employees.
• Train crew members in identifying and inspecting defective areas and provide technical instruction on roadside defects and corrective actions.
• Supervise inmate crews performing maintenance activities and maintain operation records (daily crew activity reports, work orders, and vehicle checklists).
• Operate vehicles and a variety of medium and heavy equipment; perform preventative maintenance and basic repairs; conduct pre-trip inspections.
• Perform manual labor on highways using hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools; perform temporary traffic control and provide instruction on maintenance of traffic basics.
• Interpret standards and procedures to optimize efficiency while adhering to safety and loss prevention guidelines.

Knowledge:

• Basic mathematical principles and calculations.
• Standard safety rules and regulations.
• Repair and maintenance techniques for highways and related structures; operation of power tools, heavy equipment, and vehicles.

Skills:

• Verbal and written communication.
• Pre- and post-trip inspections for commercial motor vehicles (GVW 26,000 pounds or more).

Ability:

• Supervise employees effectively and maintain accurate records.
• Train and instruct crew members; develop and maintain working relationships; determine work priorities and coordinate assignments.
• Work independently and make job-related decisions.

On-call and emergency response requirements; ability to operate a CMV with a Class B CDL; may work around Department of Corrections inmates. Requires criminal background check and training/certification from the Department of Corrections to supervise inmates. Must obtain Temporary Traffic Control certification – Advanced Level within one year and maintain it. Must be responsive to emergencies as part of the Transportation Emergency Management Team.

Valid Class B driver license with acceptable driving record per policy; driving record will be reviewed.

Annual Salary Range: $48,372.92 - $62,600.25
