This position is located in DISTRICT 05 of the Department of Transportation and Development (FARMERS UNIT 540 – BASTROP–MOREHOUSE PARISH). The role involves operating heavy equipment for road and bridge construction and maintenance. The incumbent must be self‑motivated, able to work with minimal supervision, and able to interpret unforeseen conditions. The incumbent will participate in DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary.

Job Duties
  • Operates various types of heavy equipment as needed.
  • Makes minor repairs to equipment and performs preventative maintenance such as oil changes.
  • Performs other duties as directed, such as shoveling asphalt, digging footings for setting concrete forms, placing traffic control devices, delivering, loading and unloading materials or equipment, flagging traffic, operating power and hand tools.
  • Attends required training in accordance with the Department’s Structured Training Program.
  • Obtains and maintains a CDL (required for MEO 2 and MEO 1 – Heavy only) and reports CDL revocation in accordance with the Department’s Commercial Driver’s License Policy (PPM #25).
  • May perform incidental repair and construction tasks such as bridge repair, drainage structure repair, installation of guardrail, fencing, fender systems and cabling at movable bridges and other structures.
  • May perform any other tasks assigned by a supervisor or higher‑level personnel to accomplish the Department’s transportation, maintenance and construction mission.
  • May train and/or assist in training lower‑level operators or laborers.
  • May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including, but not limited to, emergency and disaster support activities.
Position‑Specific Details

Appointment Type: Probational and Promotional

Career Progression: This position may be filled as a MEO 1, MEO 2, or MEO 1/Heavy.

Compensation:

  • MEO‑1: $16.06 hourly – receives a premium pay of $1.00/hour for all hours worked and a 10% base pay increase upon attainment of permanent status.
  • MEO‑2: $17.18 hourly – receives a premium pay of $1.00/hour for all hours worked and a 10% base pay increase upon attainment of permanent status.
  • MEO‑1/HEAVY: $21.05 hourly.
