Position: Principal, Elementary (Turn Around)

Bastrop ISD - Principal, Elementary (Turn Around)

Description/Notes: Serve as instructional leader for the campus. Analyze the educational needs of assigned students and exercise leadership in planning and implementing an instructional program of maximum quality and efficiency to address these needs in a safe and supportive environment, establishing and promoting high standards and expectations for all students and staff for academic performance. Direct and manage all programs and campus activities, and supervise operations and personnel at the campus level.

Qualifications

ENTRY

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited university in educational administration or a directly related field.
  • A Texas Principal Certification, One-Year Texas Principal Certification, or Texas Mid-Management Certification.
  • A minimum of three years of successful classroom teaching experience and previous experience as an assistant principal, associate principal, or principal.
  • Five years of experience as a classroom teacher.
  • Minimum of three years of successful principal experience with demonstrated, documented success leading improvement in low-performing or at-risk campuses.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of acceptable public education leadership principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of acceptable instructional practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of Texas Education Agency rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of University Interscholastic League (UIL) rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of acceptable school finance and budget practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of acceptable human resource/supervisory practices and principles.
  • Skill in directing the work of others.
  • Skill in communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in analyzing complex information.
  • Skill in operating standard computer and software applications, including but not limited to email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations.
  • Ability to develop a shared vision and plan for a campus that focuses on continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
  • Ability to apply current research to guide and support continuous improvement and program design.
  • Ability to solve complex problems and build consensus.
  • Ability to develop and implement long-range plans.
  • Ability to support major student technology innovation.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work responsibilities and delegate appropriate campus tasks effectively.

  • Turnaround Management:
    • Establish and operationalize a vision for rapid school improvement; develop and monitor the Targeted Improvement Plan (TIP).
    • Champion the implementation of high-quality instructional materials (HQIM).
    • Facilitate weekly Professional Learning Communities (PLC) and data meetings where teachers analyze student work, identify gaps, and plan for instruction.
    • Analyze discipline and academic data to close gaps for special populations (Sped, EB, Eco-Dis, etc.).
    • Conduct daily classroom walkthroughs and provide actionable, bite-sized feedback to teachers to improve instructional quality.
    • Recruit and retain high-performing teachers with a track record of success.
    • Implement school-wide behavioral expectations and routines that maximize instructional time and ensure a safe, orderly learning environment.
    • Proactively engage families as partners in the turnaround process, ensuring frequent communication regarding student progress and campus goals.
  • Instructional Management:
    • Establish a vision that is clear, compelling, and shared.
    • Design, implement, supervise, and evaluate instructional programs for the campus.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of curriculum, instructional strategies, research on the instructional practices of the campus.
    • Develop and implement a campus improvement plan that is aligned to the needs of the campus and with District goals.
    • Promote high expectations for staff and students.
    • Ensure the application of technology as an instructional and administrative tool throughout the school.
    • Work collaboratively with District leadership to ensure that campus instructional programs are compatible with the District approved curriculum.
    • Regularly consult the campus-level committees regarding planning, operation, supervision, and evaluation of campus educational programs, including students and community representatives when appropriate.
  • Student Management:
    • Ensure the discipline management system and Student Code of Conduct are administered consistently to promote equity, effectiveness, and student success.
    • Resolve parent/student issues and concerns in a timely manner.
