Are you a proven leader with a passion for public service, emergency response, and team development? Join our Fire Department as a Lieutenant and play a vital role in protecting lives, property, and the well‑being of our community.
Responsibilities- Supervise and mentor firefighters, volunteer firefighters, and other personnel.
- Coordinate emergency operations, including fire suppression, hazardous materials incidents, technical search and rescue, and medical emergencies.
- Ensure proper maintenance, readiness, and compliance of fire apparatus, equipment, and facilities.
- Assume command of emergency incidents and direct firefighting and rescue operations until relieved by a superior officer.
- Complete administrative reports, maintain operational records, and perform related duties as assigned.
- Operate and supervise fire apparatus; drive, operate pumps, lay hose, and perform fire combat, containment, and extinguishment tasks.
- Conduct emergency activities such as rescue, administer first aid, and provide assistance as required.
- Participate in fire drills, attend and instruct classes in firefighting, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
- Receive and relay fire calls and alarms; operate radio and other communication equipment.
- Inspect buildings, hydrants, and other structures for fire prevention programs.
- Perform general maintenance of facilities and equipment, including cleaning, washing, polishing, and testing apparatus.
- Assist in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, and training programs.
- Present public, staff, and community programs on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics.
- Perform salvage operations such as covering, sweeping water, and removing debris.
- Maintain records such as activity journals, run reports, daily logs, and other required forms.
- Support relationships between the City of Bastrop and the public, maintaining courteous and cooperative behavior with city staff, citizens, and visitors.
- Maintain confidentiality of work‑related issues and city information.
- Promote public relations, media relations, and respond to sensitive public inquiries or complaints.
- Oversee regular, scheduled maintenance of equipment, inventory, and fleet management.
- Promote compliance with policies in the maintenance and care of city‑owned property and vehicles.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
- Candidate must serve a minimum six (6) month probationary period from the date of promotion or hire.
- All fire personnel are expected to engage in and maintain the highest level of training offered.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience as a full‑time paid firefighter.
- One (1) year of experience as a supervisory‑level firefighter preferred.
- Must possess a current Texas Class B (non‑CDL) driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
- Fire Officer I Certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
- Basic Firefighter Certificate from TCFP.
- Fire Instructor Level I Certification from TCFP or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
- Intermediate Firefighter Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
- EMT‑B certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
- All certifications listed above must be current and maintained from the date of hire unless otherwise specified.
Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of firefighting apparatus and tools and ability to demonstrate their use.
- Considerable knowledge of fire prevention, suppression, and investigation practices.
- Considerable knowledge of the Incident Management System and incident scene management functions.
- Extensive knowledge of the geography of the City of Bastrop, street locations, hazardous premises, principal buildings, and water source locations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department personnel, community officials, and the general public.
