BASIC FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITY:
The Bilingual Education department provides language support to assist in the communication of academic information between schools and parents to increase engagement in school activities and district-wide functions. This full range of language services are designed to help in BISD's mission of providing a
comprehensive educational experience to prepare our students for college, career and life.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
* High School diploma or GED required;
* College credit hours, preferred;
* Interpreter/Translator certification, preferred.
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
* Fluent Spanish speaking, listening, reading and writing abilities
* Skill in translating spoken words from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English at a normal speaking rate.
* Ability to translate verbal messages to written documents and written documents to verbal messages in both Spanish and English.
* Ability to adapt language based on the level of the student and parent.
* Skill in utilizing electronic systems to locate and submit data/information
* Ability to organize and prioritize work responsibilities.
* Ability to utilize basic office equipment, including fax, copier, scanner, computer, etc.
* Proficient skills in keyboarding, word processing, and operating computer software
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
Experience:
* Professional interpretation and translation experience preferred
CHARACTERISTIC
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties and Responsibilities:
* Translates a wide variety of documents from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English such as department newsletters, curriculum documents and assessment resources.
* Interprets orally from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English during conferences, telephone calls, information sessions, emergency situations, etc.
* Assists Spanish-speaking students and their families with the school enrollment process.
* Serves as liaison between the school district and our families.
* Performs other related work as required to support the Bilingual Education department in meeting compliance requirements, such as LPAC responsibilities and Title III engagement activities.
* Occasional after hour events.
* Occasional driving to various campus locations.
Professional Growth and Development:
* Keeps informed of and complies with all state and district policies and regulations concerning primary job functions.
* Keeps informed of Bilingual Education program terminology in both Spanish and English
* Attends department meetings as required.
* Attends professional development for translators/interpreters, etc.
Organization Morale:
* Participates in team building activities and the decision-making process as appropriate.
* Communicates and collaborates with campus/department staff to enhance service delivery and customer satisfaction.
* Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information according to the Family Education Rights to Privacy Act (FERPA)
* Positively communicate and represent the District and Department vision/mission.
Other Responsibilities:
* Comply with policies established by federal and state law, including but not limited to State Board of Education and local Board policy.
* Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
