Senior Equipment Operator
The City seeks a skilled and dependable senior equipment operator to support the construction, maintenance, and repair of municipal streets, rights of way, and storm drainage systems through the safe and efficient operation of heavy and specialized equipment. The ideal candidate has extensive experience operating heavy equipment, demonstrates a strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship, and can work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team.
This position ensures safe roadways, effective drainage, and reliable public infrastructure for community needs.
Under general supervision of the Streets & Drainage Superintendent, Crew Leader, and/or Director, the operator functions in a lead capacity, primarily operating medium to heavy duty equipment. Responsibilities include daily operator duties, manual labor in various weather conditions, emergency responses such as flooding or storm damage, and support for other city department functions and special events. The operator is distinguished by the lead capacity and ability to operate complex medium to heavy duty equipment.
Salary is dependent on qualifications. Minimum starting salary is $23.28 hourly.
Essential Functions- Operate various types of light to heavy weight equipment (asphalt paving machine, striping machine, tractors and shredders, sweepers, rollers, skid steers, dump trucks, water trucks, backhoes, curb machine, grade-all, excavators, and motor graders).
- Perform survey tasks in construction and repair of streets and drainage (calculating grades, setting slopes, establishing elevations, measuring location sites).
- Perform complete demolition of a road/street using a motor grader (demo existing asphalt, base and sub‑base, relay new base and sub‑base to grade level, lay new asphalt with paving machine).
- Perform seal coating and chip sealing of existing roads/streets.
- Maintain streets and related areas (striping, pothole repair, utility cuts, city construction activities).
- Install, repair, and maintain rights of way and drainage systems (cleaning debris from grates, inlets, culverts; trimming overgrowth; installing/signage replacement; repairing damaged sidewalks).
- Ensure completion of regularly scheduled vehicle and equipment maintenance and required documented records.
- Maintain inventory of parts, materials, and supplies used in the field.
- Under guidance of crew leader, superintendent, or director, perform traffic control duties; set up, maintain, and remove traffic control devices and signs per work‑site safety standards.
- Attend periodic safety meetings as required.
- Follow safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Document work completed and report infrastructure issues.
- Maintain regular and consistent attendance (Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.); leave scheduled to avoid interference with tasks or deadlines.
- Remain available for immediate call‑in due to natural or man‑made disaster, directed by City Manager.
- Work assigned on‑call duty and overtime as needed.
- Be available for weekends or night callouts when necessary.
- Function in a lead capacity when directed and/or applicable, providing guidance and assistance to Streets & Drainage Equipment Operators and/or Maintenance Workers.
- Provide support for other Streets & Drainage Department functions as needed or directed, with a variety of work and use of equipment required in the construction, repair, maintenance of city streets, drainage systems, rights of way, signage, and related areas.
- Provide assistance to other city department functions (i.e., special events) as needed or directed, with a variety of work and use of equipment.
- Perform other related work as directed.
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by 3–5 years of experience operating medium to heavy duty equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licenses and Certificates- Valid Class “B” Commercial Driver License with Air Brakes Endorsement, or obtain within one year of employment.
- Maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment.
