Come join our Public Works Streets & Drainage team as an Equipment Operator. Under general supervision of the Streets & Drainage Superintendent, operates light duty equipment in the construction, repair, and maintenance of City streets, sidewalks, driveways, signage, curbs, gutters, and other forms of storm drainage systems. Street and drainage work includes striping streets, repairing asphalt, pouring and finishing concrete, removing debris from grates, inlets and culverts. Provides support in other Public Works functions, such as maintenance of City right of ways, clearing, collection, and/or removal of trash, debris, brush, and special events as needed.
Performs related work as directed.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operates various types of equipment, i.e., striping machine, tractors and shredders, sweepers, rollers, skid steers, dump trucks and water trucks, in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, sidewalks, and drainage systems.
- Repairs streets and related areas due to striping, potholes, utility cuts, and City construction activities.
- Maintains City streets, right of ways, and drainage systems, i.e., cleaning debris from grates, inlets and culverts; trimming overgrowth; installing, repairing and replacing signage; repairing damaged sidewalks.
- Maintains records concerning work orders, regularly scheduled vehicle and equipment maintenance, etc.
- Under guidance of the Streets and Drainage Crew Leader, and/or Foreman, and/or Superintendent, and/or Public Works Director, performs proper placement of traffic control devices, signs, and caution indicators per work site.
- Attends required safety meetings in accordance with department policy.
- Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.

Job Duties:
- Provides support to other Public Works functions as needed such as special events.
- May operate medium duty equipment upon demonstrating essential skill levels for safe and effective operation of assigned equipment.
- Performs related work as directed.
Attendance Requirements:
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours, Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m.
- 3:00 p.m. - Must be available for revolving weekly on-call schedule, weekends, or night call-outs when necessary.
- Required to remain available for immediate call-in due to any natural or man-made disaster, as directed by the City Manager.
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
- High school diploma or GED; supplemented by six (6) months to one (1) year work experience that demonstrates the ability to safely and effectively operate a variety of light duty equipment associated with the construction, maintenance and/or repair of streets, sidewalks, and drainage systems; or, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licenses and Certificates:
- Valid Texas Class "C" Driver License or higher.
- Must have and maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to comprehend and retain knowledge of the practices and materials utilized in the installation, maintenance, and restoration and repair of streets and drainage systems.
- Considerable working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
- Working knowledge of safe and effective operation of light duty equipment and hand-held gas, diesel, or electrically powered tools used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, roadways, right of ways, and drainage systems.
- Ability to understand and receive both oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow personnel, and outside departments and agencies with which position interacts.
Physical Requirements:
- Some tasks involve frequent walking, standing; some lifting and carrying of moderate weight (12-20 pounds); and/or the operation of vehicles, shop, or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe/productive operations.
