Fleet Mechanic

The Fleet Mechanic performs skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance on the City’s diverse fleet of approximately 200 units—including passenger vehicles, heavy equipment, light-duty trucks, and light equipment/small engine repair. This position plays a key role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of all City vehicles and equipment. In addition to strong mechanical ability, the position requires proficiency in using diagnostic tools and fleet asset management software to scan codes, document work, and complete work orders electronically.

Job Functions

Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repairs on gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and cooling systems.
  • Conduct complex repairs of engines, transmissions, drive trains, brakes, and fuel systems.
  • Inspect and service public safety vehicles with focus on safety and reliability.
  • Service and repair heavy equipment (backhoes, loaders, mowers, dump trucks, etc.).
  • Utilize computer-based diagnostic tools and scan systems to identify and correct mechanical issues.
  • Use the Fleet Asset Management system (e.g., Open Gov/Samsara) to log work orders, inspections, and parts usage.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records for each vehicle and equipment unit.
  • Assist with warranty and recall coordination and vendor communications.
  • Comply with City, State, and Federal safety regulations and environmental procedures, including proper handling and disposal of oils, coolants, and refrigerants.
  • Maintain shop tools, diagnostic equipment, and work areas in a safe and organized manner.
  • May assist with inventory management, equipment inspection scheduling, and related fleet operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support City operations and departmental goals.
Marginal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates initiative and diligence in the prompt and proper completion of all job duties and other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for safeguarding City property.
  • Maintaining confidentiality with regard to all City business.
  • Performs other related work as directed.
Job Requirements

A. Education, Training and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Six months to one year of work that demonstrates the ability to provide safe and effective maintenance of all City-owned vehicles and equipment, including any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
B. Licenses
  • Valid Texas Class B Driver’s License (CDL) with an acceptable driving record to be maintained throughout employment; or
  • The ability to obtain a Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 120 days of hire.
C. Work Hours and Attendance
  • Regular and consistent attendance for assigned work hours is essential. Leave scheduled should be managed so as not to interfere with ability to accomplish tasks, including special projects and assignments with deadlines.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, overtime including night callouts or after hours for special projects, special events, as needed.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations as required.
D. Other Qualifications
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment background check, physical exam, and drug screening.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
