About the Role

The Fermilab Magnet Systems Department is seeking a Mechanical Engineer (3-year term) to support the Accelerator Systems at Fermilab and other National Laboratories. Under written and oral direction from senior engineers the successful candidate will work with other engineers, designer and drafters on the design, fabrication, repair, and modification of Accelerator Magnets. The candidate utilizes fundamental engineering concepts and principles to perform basic engineering tasks and develop enhanced familiarization with the Laboratory’s method of project engineering, from the design stage through review, procurement, manufacture, installation, test, and operation.

What

your day-to-day as a Mechanical Engineer (3-year term) at Fermilab will look like
  • Analyzes data and performs engineering calculations. Develops less complicated designs of specific parts, components, or phases of a project.
  • Develops and documents basic engineering design solutions, usually consisting of basic engineering techniques.
  • Provides technical direction to draftspersons, designers, engineering associates and technicians, as assigned.
  • Participates in procurement, as well as manufacturing, installation, testing, and operation.
  • Assists in the development of cost estimates, as well as the monitoring of budgetary obligations.
  • With review and approval of supervisor, propose resources, ensuring conformance to specifications and cost/time constraints.
  • Serves on safety panels, review committees, and other subcommittees as assigned.
  • May participate in technical conferences and publication.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
Skills and Attributes for Success
  • Bachelor’s (minimum) in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution.
Applicable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Basic professional knowledge of theories, concepts, principles, and methodology for the engineering discipline. Possess ability to perform basic engineering design solutions and techniques.
