About the role

Fermilab's Accelerator Division (AD) Beams Instrumentation (BI) Department is seeking a Beams Instrumentation Mechanical Assembly Technician. The BI Mechanical Assembly Technician will support the preparation, alignment, and functional testing of PIP-II Beam Profile Monitor (BProM) system as part of a multi-year effort to build and qualify approximately 30 units. This person will perform hands‑on fabrications, assembly, subcomponent alignment, testing support, and documentation while working closely with engineering and technical teams to ensure consistent, high-quality builds.

What

your day-to-day as a Beams Instrumentation Mechanical Assembly Technician at Fermilab will look like
  • Fabricate, assemble, set up, operate, test, repair, and modify mechanical equipment, assemblies, and beam profile monitor (BProM) components using engineering drawings diagrams, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Perform mechanical assembly and setup of BProM components - including AES/TWS elements-following established procedures and build standards.
  • Conduct fine mechanical align of pickups and assembles using approved tools and precision alignment techniques.
  • Support functional testing of BProM pickups including test preparations, fixture setup, mechanical checks, and assistance with data collection.
  • Assist with subsystem testing, calibration preparation, and system readiness activities for BProM instruments.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on tools, fixtures, and specialized mechanical assembly equipment, support troubleshooting and mechanical issue resolution.
  • Provide moderately complex technical support and maintenance for mechanical instruments and assemblies; troubleshoot and perform repairs when required.
  • Document assembly steps, measurements, configuration details, test results, and alignment data in logbooks or electronic systems; write and update procedures as needed.
  • Prepare technical data, reports, and safety documentation using standard software tools.
  • Support integration, alignment confirmation, fit checks, and installation preparations in coordination with engineering, alignment, vacuum, and controls teams.
  • Maintain inventories of mechanical parts, hardware, materials, and BProM-related build components; procure small parts and supplies when needed.
  • Follow all ES&H procedures, conduct periodic safety checks, and support hazard analyses, environmental surveys, waste handling, and radiological-related tasks as required.
  • Respond to operational and emergency needs, including off‑hour call‑in support when necessary.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of mechanical and BProM assembly methods, tooling, workflow, and documentation.
  • Assist in the implementation, improvement, and occasional design of mechanical systems and assemblies; ensure high quality in all job aspects.
  • Provide guidance to less experienced technicians and serve as shift supervisor when assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Essential Competencies and Attributes for Success
  • High School degree (or technical certificate or equivalent) plus 3+ years of extensive related experience or up to 1 year of Department of Energy laboratory experience.

  • Fundamental mechanical and/or electrical technical skills applicable to assembly, alignment, and testing support tasks.

  • May be required to legally operate a government vehicle.
