About the Role:The Division Leader, Quantum Technology provides scientific leadership, strategic direction, and long-term planning for the Quantum Technology Division under the Technology Directorate.
What your day-to-day as the Division Leader, Quantum Technology at Fermilab will look like:Strategic Planning and Execution
- In coordination with the TD ALD and SQMS Center Director, assists in formulating long-range strategic planning for quantum technology research, ensuring integration across Fermilab's scientific and operational missions.
- Identifies and champions opportunities for future quantum technology development that advances next generation capabilities supporting national scientific priorities.
- In coordination with the SQMS Center Director, assists in realizing the scientific directions that advance superconducting quantum devices, quantum sensing, quantum networking, and quantum computing and algorithms in alignment with laboratory and DOE mission priorities.
- Provides high-level oversight of Division operations, ensuring delivery on scope, schedule, budget, and scientific impact.
- Establishes clear goals and performance metrics for the Division to facilitate the successful execution of Division programs, projects, and experiments.
- Leads undirected research programs with broad scientific discretion aligned with the Laboratory mission.
- Oversees proposal development and competitive funding pursuits.
- Performs advanced data analysis, develops advanced instrumentation, proposes new experiments, gives scientific presentations, and publishes peer-reviewed papers to address questions in quantum technology and related fields.
- Ensures safe operation of Division experiments and facilities in compliance with ES&H requirements, policies, and procedures.
- Provides line management and leadership for group leaders promoting a strong culture of safety, ethics, and stewardship.
- Supports mentorship, career development, and succession planning within the division.
- Exercises authority over division personnel actions including hiring decisions, promotions, performance evaluations, professional development, and actions associated with disciplinary or performance issues. Attracts, develops and retains human capital to sustain division capability.
- Supervises personnel executing major programs and projects; facilitates project design, scheduling, and budget development.
- Fosters an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing research environment.
- Develops and manages Division budget to support research and operations programs.
- Allocates personnel and resources to ensure effective and efficient program execution.
- Ensures compliance with DOE, laboratory, and directorate requirements for safety, security, planning, reporting, and execution.
- Represents the Quantum Technology Division to DOE program officers and other funding agencies as assigned by the ALD and the SQMS Center Director; prepares reports, briefings, and coordinates reviews.
- Represents Fermilab in advisory committees, national and international scientific communities and collaborations, as assigned.
- Serves on laboratory committees and participates in professional scientific organizations, workshops, reviews, and conferences to advance the laboratory's mission.
- Strengthens partnerships with universities, laboratories, and the international high energy physics community.
- Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
Education and Experience:
