Summary ofJob Duties
The FARM Instructor is a faculty position dedicated to providing high‑quality academic and technical training on a 250+ acre working farm. The instructor uses the farm as a “hands‑on” classroom to prepare students for careers in agriculture and industries utilizing agriculture‑adjacent skills. The focus is modern farm and ranch operations, blending precision agriculture with regenerative farming practices. Beyond instruction, the position is essential for curriculum development, student learning assessment, and engagement with industry partners.
PositionDuties
- 75% Instruction – Deliver high‑quality instruction in farm and ranch management operations, develop and assess student learning outcomes, and maintain a safe learning environment.
- 15% Student Retention and Recruitment – Implement retention strategies, hold office hours for academic support, and lead recruitment activities to promote the FARM program.
- 5% Industry Alignment – Build and maintain relationships with industry partners so the curriculum remains aligned with technological trends and workforce needs.
- 5% Professional Development and College Service – Engage in professional development, participate in governance, serve on advisory committees, and participate in community service.
- Livestock and Poultry Management – Solid understanding of animal health, nutrition, breeding cycles, biosecurity, and daily operation.
- Crop and Forage Production – Knowledge of growing and managing row crops and pastures, seed selection, weed control, and nutrient management.
- Regenerative Farming – Practical knowledge of sustainable practices such as rotational grazing, cover cropping, and no‑till.
- Precision Agriculture – Ability to use GPS‑guided equipment, field mapping, and data for planting and fertilizing decisions.
- Applied Instruction – Demonstrate concepts effectively in the field and coach students to proficiency.
- Equipment Operation – Teach safe operation of modern farm machinery and maintenance.
- Ag‑Software Proficiency – Use farm management software and mobile apps to track records and monitor livestock.
- Safety Leadership – Instill safety habits and maintain a disciplined safety culture.
- Problem Solving – Adapt teaching plans to weather, equipment, or farm realities.
- Clear Communication – Explain the “why” behind farming practices.
- Collaboration – Coordinate student activities with the Farm Manager.
- Community Connection – Build relationships with local farmers and businesses to aid student internships and employment.
- High school diploma with a minimum of seven years of documented farming and/or ranching experience with responsibility for operations, equipment use, and production decisions; OR associate’s degree or higher in Agriculture or a closely related field with a minimum of four years of documented farming/ranching experience.
