Position: First-Year Adviser

First-Year Adviser

Exempt, Full-time/12-month.

The individual in this position is responsible for advising and supporting first-year students in a way that is supportive of the College's mission and goals, and that promotes holistic development through intentional and proactive advising, coaching, curricular support and co-curricular involvement. The First-Year Adviser will also have the responsibility for conducting related outreach and retention-focused programming and fully participating in summer registration and orientation sessions.

The First-Year Adviser will report directly to the Director of First-Year Advising and will maintain positive, collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, academic departments, athletics, and other student-oriented departments across campus.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the academic adviser for first-year students following a proactive, intentional advising model.
  • Work to improve student success and retention among first-year students.
  • Under the direction of the Director of First-Year Advising, collaborate with other First-Year Advisers to provide outreach and retention-focused programming.
  • Support first-year students through academic coaching and by promoting the use of curricular support services and co-curricular involvement.
  • Be a full participant in the planning, preparation, and execution of Summer Orientation and Registration events and, as needed, January New Student Orientations.
  • Actively nurture and maintain positive, collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, coaches, and all other student-oriented departments across campus.
  • Some evening and weekend work will be required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to fostering belonging, engagement, and academic success for all students.
  • Physical ability to recognize data in the written form (i.e. schedules, reports, etc.) so as to enter data in a computer system.
  • Physical ability to sit for extended periods of time (i.e. computer).
  • Physical ability to use the telephone to conduct business.
  • Physical ability to stand and to lift moderate weight.
  • Occasional weekend/evening work required.
