About the role

Working as part of our in-house maintenance team, you will undertake planned and reactive maintenance across the University's academic, residential and sports facilities, primarily on campus with occasional work at our city locations.

The role supports our multi-skilled Plumbers and other skilled trades and involves routine maintenance, minor repairs, inspections and first line fault investigation across plumbing and associated mechanical building services. This includes hot and cold-water systems, sanitaryware, internal drainage, heating systems, pumps, water softeners, laboratory services and prescribed water hygiene activities, within your training and demonstrated competence.

You will also assist skilled trades with more complex maintenance, repairs, replacement and small installation or alteration works, recognising the limits of your competence and escalating work where qualified trade, specialist or authorised intervention is required.

About you

You will

  • have relevant vocational training in mechanical, plumbing, building services or general maintenance, or equivalent practical experience sufficient to undertake routine maintenance and minor repairs safely.
  • have practical hands‑on experience of planned and reactive maintenance, minor repairs or similar work within a building, engineering or facilities environment.
  • have practical knowledge and experience of hot and cold‑water services, sanitaryware, internal drainage, heating systems and associated mechanical building services at a level appropriate to the role.
  • be able to undertake first line fault investigation and practical problem solving, carry out minor repairs within your competence and recognise when work needs to be escalated.
  • be able to work independently on routine tasks and effectively support Multi‑skilled Plumbers and other skilled trades on more complex work.
  • have good communication and customer service skills and be able to work effectively with colleagues, students, staff and contractors.
  • be comfortable using mobile devices and digital work management systems.
  • be flexible and able to adapt to changing operational priorities.

A relevant Level 1 or Level 2 City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ or equivalent vocational qualification would be an advantage, as well as water hygiene or Legionella awareness, relevant health and safety training or CSCS card, and awareness of BMS or building controls.
