Safety Technician
Working as a Safety Technician involves protecting people by ensuring that risks in the workplace are properly controlled.
Responsibilities- Conduct safety audits of ships, ship unit sections, and the physical plant as assigned.
- Record audit results electronically on an iPad utilizing the TruQC Program.
- Identify and correct unsafe workplace conditions and/or individual unsafe acts/behaviors.
- Demonstrated ability to handle conflict, follow direction, and make decisions.
- Demonstrate knowledge of behavioral safety concepts, participate in and guide Safety Action Teams/Committees.
- Communicate with large groups of employees.
- Train employees on proper use of fall protection systems, mobile and overhead equipment, respirator use/fit testing, and hazard awareness training.
- Perform New Employee Orientation.
- Communicate EHS policy and procedure effectively with personnel at all levels.
Pay range: $28.39/hr - $29.48/hr.
Qualifications- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Preferred:
Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in occupational health and safety or related discipline.
A degree in an accredited safety program is preferred. Prior work experience and/or BIW experience may be substituted with consideration given to the following:
- Relevant work experience demonstrated through appropriate knowledge.
- No fear of heights or confined spaces.
- Strong communication skills, specifically with large groups of employees and with personnel at all levels.
- Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, and flexible to adjust to changing priorities.
- Prior experience as a trainer.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Preferred:
Prior experience operating mobile equipment and aerial lift equipment. - Preferred:
Basic knowledge of OSHA regulations and prior safety experience. - Preferred:
Prior hazard analysis experience. - Preferred:
Prior experience in safety training. - Preferred:
Prior BIW Safety Action Team participation. - Preferred:
Prior safety experience in an industrial environment.
