BIW is seeking an experienced American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to help create an inclusive and accessible workplace for our deaf and hard‑of‑hearing employees. In this role, you’ll support day‑to‑day communication between hearing and Deaf or hard‑of‑hearing individuals in manufacturing and/or office environments and play an important part in ensuring all employees can fully participate and succeed. This position will report to the Director of Ethics & Compliance.

This position is intentionally flexible – we’re open to structuring it as either part‑time or full‑time based on your availability, experience, and interests.

  • Part‑time:
    Ideal if you’d like to continue freelance interpreting while gaining access to competitive health care benefits and earned paid leave.
  • Full‑time:
    Offers the opportunity to expand your impact by taking on additional responsibilities within Ethics & Compliance such as assisting with administrative or program‑related responsibilities.
Safety Leadership
  • Take personal responsibility for your own safety through hazard identification and mitigation.
  • Ensure practices/processes are safely executed.
  • Communicate safety concerns and model safe behaviors.
Project Execution
  • Utilize BIW’s business operating system (BOS) to execute work and communicate progress daily.
  • Provide ASL interpretation for meetings, training, and workplace interactions.
  • Facilitate clear, effective communication between deaf and hearing employees.
  • Partner with teams across the organization to support accessibility needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional interpreting standards.
Training and Development
  • Keep up to date on all required training, both internal and external.
  • Work with your leadership team to take advantage of training opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Team Collaboration and Communication
  • Work with various internal customers to provide necessary ASL support.
  • Report to leadership any identified problems so that corrective action may be taken to prevent recurrence.
Continuous Improvement
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in our daily processes and lead efforts to complete corrective actions to take advantage of those opportunities.

Qualifications
  • A High School Diploma or GED is required; a college degree in ASL or Human Resources is preferred.
  • 3+ years of ASL interpretation experience required.
  • ASL Licensure in accordance with MRS Title 32, Chapter 22, American Sign Language Interpreters 1525 required.
  • License types:
    • Limited Interpreter License in the State of Maine required.
    • Conditional Interpreter License in the State of Maine with requirement to become certified before expiration of the conditional license, required.
    • State of Maine Certified Interpreter License required.
  • Must be able to obtain a secret security clearance within 6 months of hire.
  • You must be a US Citizen for consideration, and you must be able to obtain an interim security clearance within the first 45 days of hire.
  • Expert understanding of both ASL and English required.
  • Cultural knowledge about the deaf community preferred.
  • Ability to interpret at least 90 minutes solo, and 8 hours with a supporting interpreter, required.
  • Must follow the code of ethics established by The Registry of the Interpreters of the Deaf (RID).
  • Clearly communicate messages both verbally and in ASL.
  • Be self‑motivated and have the ability to work independently and meet internal customer needs.
  • Experience using devices and programs to provide remote interpreting preferred.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience supporting communications in manufacturing or heavy industry preferred.
  • Must be flexible to work scheduled assignments during any of our three shifts.
