This is a 12‑month full‑time position. The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center seeks a knowledgeable and detail‑oriented Fiscal Specialist to support the daily fiscal operations of the Comptroller. The role requires advanced expertise in financial management and regulatory compliance, including year‑end close‑out, account reconciliations, advanced financial reporting, and assessment of work performed by accounting staff to ensure compliance and consistency across all financial processes.
The incumbent will help develop processes, procedures, and manuals for all F&A departmental functions. This position is an advanced‑level financial or accounting role in higher education, the federal government, or the state government.
- Assist the Comptroller in the daily fiscal operations of the F&A Department, performing high‑level account reconciliations, month‑end and year‑end financial reporting, and closing activities.
- Assess and verify the accuracy of work performed by accounting staff (journal entries, invoices, monthly reports) and resolve accounting discrepancies.
- Prepare and maintain financial documents, spreadsheets, and databases as needed, and assist with the completion of AFR, SNP, SRECNP, and other complex financial statements.
- Assist with audit preparation and documentation.
- Advise leadership on financial trends and operational efficiency.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
- At least 5 years of advanced‑level experience.
- A combination of work experience and college credit may substitute for the bachelor’s degree, but not for the 5 years of advanced experience.
- Strong proficiency in financial systems, data analysis tools, and Microsoft Excel.
Ability to sit for 6‑8 hours per day, use a keyboard and mouse, view computer screens for 6‑8 hours per day; perform typing, clicking, and writing; basic hand‑eye coordination; occasionally lift and carry light items of 10‑15 pounds; read, hear, and respond to text and instructions.
