Position SummaryThe Senior Accountant is responsible for preparing, analyzing, and supporting statutory financial reporting in accordance with NAIC guidelines and applicable state insurance regulations. This role serves as a key contributor to the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes while ensuring financial reporting is accurate, compliant, and timely. The Senior Accountant will also provide guidance on statutory accounting matters and support continuous improvement initiatives within the Accounting department.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and review statutory-basis financial statements in compliance with NAIC Annual and Quarterly Statement instructions.
- Assist in the preparation and filing of Annual Statements, Quarterly Statements, and supplemental filings.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts in accordance with Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP).
- Perform detailed account reconciliations and financial variance analyses.
- Prepare and review statutory schedules, including Schedule P, Schedule F, and other required filings.
- Prepare statutory footnotes and financial disclosures.
- Collaborate with actuarial, underwriting, claims, and finance teams to ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Support external audits and regulatory examinations by preparing documentation and responding to requests.
- Monitor changes to statutory accounting guidance and regulatory requirements.
- Recommend and implement process improvements and strengthen internal controls.
- Assist with system implementations, automation projects, and mentor less experienced accounting staff as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 4+ years of accounting experience, including 2+ years of insurance statutory accounting experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and NAIC reporting requirements.
- Experience with insurance annual statement software (GAIN, OneSumX, AQS, or similar) preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
- CPA or CPA-track preferred.
- Property & Casualty insurance accounting experience.
- Familiarity with Schedule P, Schedule F, reinsurance accounting, and loss reserve concepts.
- Experience working with external auditors and insurance regulators.
- Knowledge of GAAP versus statutory accounting.
