Louisiana State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Paul M. Hebert Law Center (LSU Law). Reporting to the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs & Provost, the dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of one of the nation’s most distinctive law schools. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a law center that uniquely integrates civil and common law, providing students with an educational experience unmatched in the United States.

Louisiana State University (LSU) is an R1 research university serving Louisiana and the world, with the distinct status of a land-, sea-, and space-grant institution. The campus enrolls approximately 42,000 students across nearly 200 bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and specialist degree programs. Research expenditures have reached a record-setting pace over the past few years and are at approximately $250 million. In recent years, LSU has worked tirelessly to bring in top faculty members who have achieved national and international recognition, as well as larger, more successful incoming first-year classes.

The dean of LSU Law provides strategic leadership for all aspects of the Law Center, including academic programs, research and scholarship, faculty and staff development, enrollment management, student success, fiscal stewardship, fundraising, and external engagement.

Central to LSU Law’s identity is its longstanding commitment to bijuralism — the rigorous integration of Louisiana’s civil law tradition with the American common law system. As LSU Law implements a newly adopted curriculum (effective Fall 2026) that deepens and modernizes this bijural commitment, the next dean will play a critical role in ensuring its faithful and effective implementation. The dean must both honor Louisiana’s civil law heritage and alumni community and advance LSU Law’s distinctive model as a nationally competitive and forward-looking approach to legal education in the United States.

The next dean will have the opportunity to build upon LSU Law’s considerable strengths while leading the Law Center through the next chapter of its development. The successful candidate will be an accomplished academic leader who can articulate a compelling vision for the future and position LSU Law for continued state, regional, national, and international distinction. Working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs & Provost, the dean will foster a culture that values academic excellence and student success while strengthening LSU Law’s visibility and impact throughout Louisiana and beyond.

The candidate for dean should have outstanding academic credentials, including a J.D., and a record of scholarly and professional accomplishments appropriate for appointment as a full professor with tenure at LSU Law.
