Title:

Special Education Teacher

Purpose of Position:
Lead the development and implementation of specialized educational programs and activities within our SpEd classroom, tailored to meet the diverse needs of students with exceptionalities. The role will focus on creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment where students can explore, discover, and develop essential skills in alignment with their individualized education plans (IEPs). The Special Education Room Teacher plays a crucial role in promoting academic growth, social-emotional development, and independence among students with special needs.

Essential Functions:

Individualized Program Development:
  • Collaborate with the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to design and implement personalized learning experiences that address the unique needs and goals of students with exceptionalities.
  • Modify curriculum materials and adapt instructional strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles, sensory preferences, and abilities.
  • Integrate assistive technologies, adaptive equipment, and specialized resources to support student learning and participation.
  • Fulfill case manager responsibilities including developing and writing IEPs, holding meetings and maintaining required documentation
Differentiated Instruction and Support:
  • Provide direct instruction and individualized support to students with special needs, employing evidence-based practices and instructional techniques tailored to their strengths and challenges.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom culture that promotes acceptance, empathy, and respect for all students.
  • Implement behavior management strategies and interventions to address individualized needs and promote positive social interactions.
Collaborative Teamwork:
  • Collaborate closely with special education colleagues, general education teachers, support staff, and related service providers to ensure a coordinated and cohesive approach to student support and instruction.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, parent conferences, and IEP reviews to assess student progress, set goals, and adjust instructional strategies as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers, providing regular updates on student performance, achievements, and areas of focus.
Case Management:
  • Maintain IEP folders for each student on your caseload; update monthly following network expectations
  • Complete Progress Reports in eSER every 12 weeks
  • Ensure IEPs have signatures
  • Include student’s current behavior plan in the student's IEP folder
Data Collection and Progress Monitoring:
  • Collect and analyze data to monitor student progress, track achievement of IEP goals, and inform instructional decision-making.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments and observations to evaluate student strengths, needs, and areas for growth.
  • Document student progress and maintain accurate records in compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices in special education.
Professional Development and Growth:
  • Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge of special education practices, instructional methodologies, and assistive technologies.
  • Stay abreast of current research, trends, and best practices in the field of special education, incorporating new insights into instructional planning and classroom practice.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to share expertise, resources, and innovative strategies for supporting students with exceptionalities.
Behavioral and Social Skills Support:
  • Implement behavior management strategies and interventions to address challenging behaviors and promote positive social skills development.
  • Collaborate with school counselors, psychologists, and behavior specialists to develop behavior intervention plans (BIPs) for students with significant behavioral needs.
  • Provide support and guidance to students in developing self-regulation and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Education, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
