Responsibilities
** This position is located in St. George, LA**
The Public Works Supervisor is responsible for coordinating, directing, and overseeing the daily activities of personnel, field crews, and contractors in the maintenance and repair of public utilities and infrastructure, including but not limited to streets, drainage systems, stormwater systems, traffic signs and markings, vegetation control, and other right-of-way maintenance.
This position provides direct supervision to Public Works staff, ensures compliance with City standards and regulatory requirements, and serves as operational support to the Public Works Director. The Supervisor exercises independent judgment in scheduling work, allocating resources, resolving field issues, and ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable specifications.
The Public Works Supervisor serves as acting designee in the absence of the Public Works Director when assigned.
Leadership & Supervision- Supervise, direct, and evaluate Public Works field crews and assigned personnel.
- Assign daily work tasks, prioritize service requests, and ensure timely completion of projects.
- Inspect completed work sites to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with City standards.
- Provide coaching, training, and performance feedback to staff.
- Enforce safety policies, operational procedures, and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Perform manual labor alongside crews when operationally necessary.
- Coordinate maintenance and repair of streets, drainage systems, storm drains, culverts, signage, vegetation control areas, and right-of-way infrastructure.
- Inspect public works complaints and document detailed scope of work, labor, materials, and equipment needed.
- Respond to homeowner requests regarding drainage, stormwater, erosion control, and related infrastructure concerns.
- Meet with property owners for off-road drainage projects and secure required Hold Harmless and Spoil Release forms.
- Request utility locates in coordination with the Engineering Department.
- Coordinate installation of special event banners and decorations.
- Serve as Stormwater Management Coordinator and perform inspections required under the City’s Stormwater Management Plan (MS4).
- Conduct periodic inspections of active construction sites to ensure erosion and sediment controls are maintained.
- Assist the Public Works Director and City Engineer with MS4 reporting requirements.
- Perform subdivision construction inspections and review culvert permits to ensure compliance with City, E , and DOTD specifications.
- Coordinate and oversee third-party contractors performing public works-related tasks.
- Prepare Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for drainage and stormwater projects, develop detailed scopes of work, and oversee contractor performance.
- Manage the City’s Vegetation Control Program.
- Ensure contractors complete work according to City standards and contract requirements.
- Work with the Public Works Director to maintain equipment, tools, and fleet assets.
- Oversee equipment usage and ensure proper maintenance and accountability.
- Utilize GPS surveying equipment to verify drainage system elevations and infrastructure placement.
- Assist with maintaining work orders and asset documentation.
- Meet with homeowners, HOAs, Council Members, and the Mayor to address public works concerns.
- Represent the Public Works Department in meetings related to drainage, stormwater, and infrastructure projects.
- Assist with after-hours emergency callouts as required.
- Serve as back-up to the Public Works Director when designated.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Minimum education:
High School Degree, or GED equivalent. - Desired education:
Associate’s Degree or Technical College training in a related field. - Related work experience of 5 to 7 years, or
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Driver’s License.
