For over 30 years, the staff of Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC) has strived to merge resources of state government and universities to help identify, develop, and implement new technology to improve the state's transportation system. Since its creation by the legislature in 1986, LTRC has grown to national prominence through its efforts to improve transportation systems in Louisiana. The center conducts short‑term and long‑term research and provides technology assistance, engineering training and continuing education, technology transfer, and problem‑solving services to DOTD and others in the transportation community.
LTRC's goal is to merge the resources of state government and universities to identify, develop, and implement new technology to improve the state's transportation system.
Under the supervision of the Engineer Supervisor team or Engineer Technician DCL, this position is responsible for conducting the unit's laboratory and field research program in response to DOTD's objectives and for problems of extraordinary difficulty by serving as lead worker for the Concrete Research Unit of the Louisiana Transportation Research Center. The program encompasses a full spectrum of transportation technology and operations incorporating diverse infrastructure areas such as geosynthetics, geologic engineering, geotechnical field instrumentation, in‑situ soil exploration, nuclear non‑destructive testing, piling and embankment design, and pavement base material and subgrade design.
Job Duties- Assist the Engineer 6 and Engineering Technician DCL in the development and conduct of research activities.
- Develop and conduct work plans and execute the research program to accomplish all research tasks and formal studies in response to complex engineering problems.
- Collect and analyze data in the geotechnical related research area using cone penetrometer, geogauge, load compression tester, electric cone penetrometer electrical density gauge, and field inclinometer.
- Use independent judgement based on experience and knowledge in the unit’s area of responsibility during laboratory and field data collection.
- Deliver analysis of data in a completed format ready for reporting or presentation.
- With broad supervision from the Engineering Technician DCL, evaluate new concepts and procedures through hands‑on interaction with various materials and personnel including engineers and academics.
Appointment Type: This position may be filled as a probationary appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency‑wide permanent status employees);
Job Appointment; or by detail to special duty.
Career Progression: This position participates in a Career Progression Group (CPG). Depending on the selected candidate's prior experience, this position may be filled as Engineering Technician 1, 2, 3, or 4.
Compensation: The position is eligible for premium pay of $2.00 per hour worked.
Eligibility and QualificationsPossession of a high school diploma or GED; or six months of experience in sub‑professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance.
