Start your career in transportation by supporting DOTD's statewide Traffic Monitoring Program. This entry-level position provides hands-on experience collecting and maintaining traffic data used for transportation planning, funding, and safety analysis across Louisiana. No engineering license required. Training provided.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) supports safe travel, economic growth, and community connection throughout the state. DOTD Engineering Technicians play a key role in supporting technical and field operations that help maintain and improve Louisiana's public road system.
Engineering Technicians assigned to the Traffic Monitoring Unit support the collection, management, and reporting of traffic data used to determine annual average daily traffic (AADT), vehicle classification, and vehicle weight, in accordance with federal guidelines.
This is an entry-level position designed for individuals interested in learning technical skills, gaining field experience, and building a career in transportation or engineering support. Work assignments involve a combination of fieldwork and office-based duties.
Minimum QualificationsPossession of a high school diploma or GED; OR Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance.

Job Duties and Other InformationJob Duties:
- Independently collect traffic data by setting up and removing traffic tubes, recorders, and related equipment
- Develop daily work plans for assigned monitoring locations
- Travel statewide to install, maintain, and remove traffic monitoring equipment
- Maintain accurate records of work performed and data collected
- Enter traffic data into databases, spreadsheets, or applications
- Generate information used for traffic reports and studies
- Collect short-session traffic volume and vehicle classification data
- Assist with emergency or disaster response activities as needed

This position is eligible for premium pay of $2.00 per hour for all hours worked. Premium pay is subject to applicable rules and may change based on assignment, funding, or policy.
