Instrumentation Engineer (Manufacturing)

Job Summary:

As part of Orion Engineers + Constructors (Orion) Instrumentation & Controls Department, the Instrumentation Engineer III is a fully competent engineer who leads the instrumentation scope for small projects or defined work packages with minimal supervision. The position is responsible for the management, oversight, and execution of instrumentation deliverables, supporting P&t and process control strategies, ensuring compliance with Orion and client standards, and providing field support from design through commissioning.

FUNCTIONS,

ACCOUNTABILITIES , AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the instrumentation portion of small projects or assigned work packages, including planning, coordination, and execution of deliverables.
  • Provide management, oversight, and execution of all instrumentation deliverables on assigned scopes, ensuring quality, consistency, and alignment with project objectives.
  • Support P&t and maintain instrumentation content on P&IDs through each project phase, ensuring that process control strategies are correctly reflected.
  • Ensure proper development of instrumentation engineering design deliverables, including instrument indexes, data sheets, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, cable/conduit schedules, and I/O lists.
  • Verify that process, mechanical, and other discipline data required for instruments is complete and correctly used to specify electrical/instrumentation equipment.
  • Perform and check instrument and control valve sizing calculations and related engineering calculations using approved tools.
  • Prepare and check technical specifications, installation details, and requisition packages for instrumentation equipment and control valves, verifying content, assembly, and completeness prior to issue.
  • Ensure proper selection of items to be specified or purchased, including compliance with client requirements, Orion standards, and applicable industry codes.
  • Ensure instrumentation content is incorporated into mechanical equipment vendor packages, coordinating with other disciplines and suppliers to resolve interfaces.
  • Interface with suppliers to ensure compliance with specifications; prepare technical bid evaluations, make recommendations for purchase, and review vendor data to verify project requirements are met.
  • Support development and review of TIC cost estimates and engineering/design man hour estimates for instrumentation scopes.
  • Provide technical support during construction, pre commissioning, and commissioning, including responding to RFIs, conducting site visits and job walks, supporting loop checks and functional tests, and troubleshooting instrumentation issues.
  • Participate in internal and external design reviews, model reviews, and client meetings as needed, clearly communicating instrumentation requirements and design decisions.
  • Apply and comply with relevant codes and standards (e.g., ISA, IEC, NEC, ANSI, API) in the design and specification of instrumentation and control systems.
  • Follow Orion quality control standards, document control procedures, and project work processes; ensure discipline documents are accurate, traceable, and properly filed.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers and designers within the instrumentation discipline.
  • Demonstrates behaviors and makes decisions that uphold Orions mission, vision, and values in all interactions with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Perform other related engineering duties as assigned to support client and company objectives.
