Copy Of Senior Electrical/Instrumentation Designer (Project Management)

ORION ENGINEERS + CONSTRUCTORS

Our successful INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING TEAM is looking to add a Senior Designer to the Team. Orion offers a competitive wage and benefit package.

SUMMARY

As part of Orion Engineers + Constructors (Orion) Engineering Services Department, the Instrumentation Designer is responsible for leading the design and development of industrial instrumentation systems and deliverables on complex projects, from concept through construction packages. This role plans and executes detailed design work, coordinates closely with multi-discipline project teams and clients, and produces accurate, constructible, and standard compliant drawings and documents that support safe, reliable operation of industrial processes and facilities.

KEY

FUNCTIONS,

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Work under the general direction of the project lead engineer and/or Orion project manager while planning and executing assigned instrumentation design tasks; higher levels are expected to operate with greater autonomy and act as discipline lead on projects. Lead and coordinate the instrumentation design effort for small and medium projects or designated units/areas on larger projects, including task planning, prioritization, and progress tracking.

Develop and maintain core instrumentation design deliverables such as instrument index updates, I/O lists, loop diagrams, wiring and termination diagrams, junction box schedules, instrument location plans, installation details, and cable tray/conduit routing drawings in accordance with Orion and client standards. Utilize 2D and 3D CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD, CADWorx, Navisworks) to model and coordinate instrument locations, supports, cable tray routing, and interfaces with other disciplines.

Interpret PFDs, P&IDs, one-lines, general arrangements, isometrics, and vendor drawings to create and maintain accurate instrumentation design documents aligned with process and control narratives. Apply discipline-appropriate design techniques and basic calculations as required to support detailed industrial instrumentation design, working with engineers for final technical approval as needed. Check and verify drafting and design work performed by other designers/drafters within the instrumentation discipline to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with standards and project requirements;

higher levels are expected to serve as primary checker and design quality resource. Monitor discipline budgets and schedules for assigned work, report status and variances, and proactively propose adjustments or resource needs to meet project goals. Identify scope changes and trends, assess design impacts, and promptly communicate required changes in hours, schedule, and deliverables to the project lead engineer or design lead.

Support development of discipline estimates, staffing plans, and design schedules for proposals and new project phases by providing input on quantities, complexity, and historical performance; higher levels may lead discipline estimating. Coordinate and interface with other disciplines (process, piping, electrical, civil/structural, mechanical) and with client representatives to resolve design issues and ensure integrated, constructible industrial solutions. Prepare and assemble complete construction design packages (IFR/IFB/IFC) for instrumentation scope in accordance with Orion document control and quality procedures.

Provide day-to-day task direction, technical guidance, and informal mentoring to junior designers and drafters assigned to the project, commensurate with level. Participate in model reviews, constructability reviews, and P&/field walkdown activities as requested to validate instrumentation layouts and tie-ins. Support field-related activities including site data collection, walkdowns, redline markups, as-built updates, and resolution of RFIs related to instrumentation design. This position is a senior individual-contributor role with no formal supervisory responsibilities.

Depending on level, may provide day-to-day task direction, technical guidance, and informal mentoring to junior designers and drafters assigned to projects; higher senior levels are expected to routinely coordinate small design teams. Adhere to Orion and client safety, quality, and document control procedures and actively contribute to a positive, collaborative project culture. Perform other related engineering and design duties as assigned to support client objectives.

DISCIPLINE

and LEVEL-SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

(All senior levels perform these activities, with increasing ownership and complexity at higher levels.) Develop and maintain loop diagrams, instrument wiring diagrams, and termination drawings for DCS, PLC, SIS, and packaged systems based on engineering inputs and control philosophies. Prepare instrument installation details, hookup drawings, and typicals for field instruments (pressure, temperature,…
