About This Job
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality's (LDEQ) mission is to provide service to the people of Louisiana through comprehensive environmental protection in order to promote and protect health, safety, and welfare. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) is seeking qualified engineers to join the Waste Permits Division's Solid Waste Engineering Group. This position provides the opportunity to apply engineering principles to the review and evaluation of solid waste facilities, permitting applications, and environmental protection systems.
Engineers in this group play an important role in protecting public health and the environment while supporting the safe and responsible management of solid waste throughout Louisiana.
Possession of a current Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.
NOTE:
Applications will be accepted from persons who possess a current Engineer Intern Certificate in states other than Louisiana. However, the applicant will be required to obtain a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate prior to appointment. The hiring agency will verify that all requirements are met.

Job Duties:
- Review engineering plans, permit applications, and technical documents for solid waste facilities.
- Evaluate landfill design, construction, operation, closure, and environmental protection systems.
- Conduct site inspections and assist with evaluating facility compliance with permit requirements and regulations.
- Provide technical guidance to facility owners, consultants, local governments, and other stakeholders.
- Prepare engineering reports, permit documents, correspondence, and recommendations to support regulatory decisions.
Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment, job appointment (a temporary appointment not to exceed four years), or promotion of permanent classified employee. If the position is filled as a job appointment, it could be converted to a probational appointment should funding become available.
Domicile: East Baton Rouge
Career Progression: This position may be filled as an Engineer Intern Applicant - Engineer 5, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant.
Compensation: This position offers a Special Entrance Rate (SER) listed below. This is the minimum compensation that may be offered. The job title and salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
- Engineer Intern 1- $26.44 per hour
- Engineer Intern 2- $28.29 per hour
- Engineer 3- $33.39 per hour
- Engineer 4- $36.90 per hour
- Engineer 5- $39.48 per hour
