DOTD is seeking a Bridge and Structural Design Engineer to support transportation projects and programs through bridge and structural design, bridge preservation, load rating, plan development, and technical support for transportation infrastructure projects
. This position supports the development, delivery, maintenance, or improvement of transportation infrastructure by applying engineering principles, conducting technical analysis, coordinating projects, and conducting compliance-related reviews.
No prior engineering experience is required — training is provided, with opportunities for career progression and advancement through the Engineering job series.
Positions are located in East Baton Rouge Parish
, and reports to the Engineer 6. While in an official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Services laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Minimum QualificationsEligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.
NoteThis is a temporary position to be utilized while the incumbent is securing a Louisiana Engineer Intern certificate. Permanent status shall be denied to incumbents occupying this position.

Job DutiesDepending on level and assignment, Engineer Intern Applicant-Engineer Intern 2 may:
- Assists with bridge and structural design activities for transportation infrastructure projects.
- Reviews or prepares plans, calculations, specifications, estimates, and structural details.
- Performs or assists with bridge load ratings, structural evaluations, or bridge preservation activities.
- Provides technical support related to bridge rehabilitation, replacement, preservation, or new capacity projects.
- Coordinates with project managers, consultants, districts, construction staff, and other internal or external partners.
- Reviews bridge-related project documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Supports development or maintenance of design guidance, standards, procedures, or technical documents.
- Assists with emergency response or technical reviews involving bridge or structural concerns.
This position is part of a Career Progression Group and may be filled as an Engineer Intern Applicant, Engineer Intern 1, or Engineer Intern 2.
CompensationThe following reflects the beginning biweekly salary for each level. A Special Entrance Rate (SER) may apply to qualifying positions.
- Engineer Intern Applicant – $1,923.20 biweekly
- Engineer Intern 1 – SER at $2,692.80 biweekly
- Engineer Intern 2 – SER at $2,881.60 biweekly
