Two years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders, or in law enforcement or security plus one of the following:

  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
  • One year of experience in any field.
  • Six months of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Possession of a current driver's license.

Job Duties

This position reports to and receives supervision from the correctional facility in matters dealing with security or offender problems and reports to Facility Maintenance Manager of Facility Division on day-to-day routine matters. Incumbent supervises Corrections Sergeant at the Department of Agriculture and Forestry headquarters building for permanent offender work crew. This position reports to the Maintenance Superintendent.

  • Works with the Corrections Sergeant in supervising security provided at the Department of Agriculture and Forestry headquarters building, which has been assigned a permanent offender work crew consisting of approximately 10 offenders.
  • The offender work crew will perform general grounds maintenance and limited building maintenance if off season.
  • This work may include but not limited to: grass cutting, removing weeds, clearing brush, painting, cleaning, etc.
  • The offender crew also handles all janitorial duties to the buildings at headquarters.
  • Ensures that security measures and performance of security work meet all institutional requirements.
  • Investigates complaints about offender activities.
  • Advises employees of the building in matters relating to contact with or behavior of offender; ensures no contraband items are given to offenders.
  • Organizes and conducts inspections and searches of offenders when required; is authorized to use force to restrain offenders when necessary.
  • Determines action to be taken upon receipt of reports of irregularities or disturbances.
  • Prepares reports for institutional review.
  • Transports offenders to and from the correctional facility daily.

Other duties may be assigned.

Moderate light lifting, 30 pounds with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.

Climbing stairs.

Reaching above shoulders.

Walking and standing (10 hours).

Environmental Requirements

Occasional excessive heat and humidity.

Working indoors and outdoors.
