Correctional Officer – front‑line enforcement of custody and control of inmates in a State penal institution. Responsibilities include security of inmates, custodial operations, inspections, escorting, patrolling, handling firearms training, and overseeing inmate activities.
Responsibilities- Complete four‑week Correctional Officer Training Academy.
- Work closely with inmates in prison facility buildings, dorms, workshops, and fields.
- Primary duty: custody and security of inmates, including housing areas, escorting, investigations, and in‑depth searches of person, property, and living quarters.
- Supervise housekeeping of inmate housing areas, inmate work crews, patrol areas, and transportation assignments.
- Follow directions from upper level officers, departmental policies, and regulations.
- Receive firearms training as required.
- High school diploma or GED.
- OR one (1) year of experience in any field.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Possession of a current driver’s license.
- Disqualified if convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence, felony, or under indictment on a felony charge until relief from legal disqualifications.
- Disqualified if found to have engaged in sexual abuse, sexual activity facilitated by force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent.
- Must meet all applicable federal and state law requirements (PREA).
Appointment type:
Probationary or promotion of a permanent, classified Louisiana state employee. Temporary appointments possible with potential conversion to probationary status if a permanent position becomes available.
Career progression can lead from Corrections Cadet → Sergeant → Sergeant‑Master → Lieutenant, with upward pay levels based on experience and successful performance.
