The Louisiana Department of Corrections is seeking dependable and fair individuals to fill an important role as CORRECTIONAL OFFICER
. This position is vital as the front‑line individual who enforces the custody and control of inmates in a state penal institution. An officer who is assertive and accountable can make a difference in the day‑to‑day operation of a facility working to rehabilitate individuals.

Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or GED; OR
- One year of experience in any field.
Special Requirements
- Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who are under indictment on a felony charge, will be disqualified until relief from those disabilities is granted.
- Applicants who have engaged in any form of sexual abuse, or who have been found to have engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force or coercion, will be disqualified in accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
- Possession of a current driver’s license.
- Four‑week Correctional Officer Training Academy.
- Work closely with inmates incarcerated in a state prison facility.
- Primarily responsible for the custody and security of inmates in facility buildings, dorms, workshops, and fields.
- Supervise housekeeping of inmate housing areas, escort prisoners, investigate suspicious activities, and perform in‑depth security searches/shakedowns of inmates’ person, property, living quarters and work locations.
- Supervise inmate work crews, patrol prison areas, and transport inmates as assigned.
- Follow direction given by upper level officers, departmental policies, and regulations.
- Will receive firearms training.
- Appointment Type:
Probation, or Promotion of a Permanent, Classified Louisiana State Employee. - Current permanent status classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted.
- An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
- This posting may also fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment; if filled as a temporary appointment, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment if a permanent position becomes available.
- Corrections Cadet, Sergeant, or Sergeant‑Master.
- Highest level experience of the selected applicant determines initial salary.
- Start as a Corrections Cadet (may start as a Corrections Sergeant with qualifying experience).
- Eligible for promotion to Corrections Sergeant after 6 months of successful employment.
- Eligible for promotion to Corrections Sergeant‑Master after one year of successful employment.
