Position Title: School Nurse, Registered Nurse (RN)
Location: Great Hearts Harveston (Upper & Lower), Baton Rouge, LA
Reports To: Director of Nursing and Headmaster
FLSA Status: Exempt, Salaried
Compensation Amount: $40,500 - $55,000

The Great Hearts Registered Nurse works within the campus health office and is responsible for providing medical care along with maintaining health and wellness to school-age scholars and school staff. The school nurse provides assessments and care for minor injuries, chronic illness, and urgent and emergency needs of scholars and staff. The Registered Nurse aids scholars and youth in developing their full potential in their own health and health education.
The Registered Nurse provides education to staff regarding health and emergency response and emergency medication administration. Maintains good communication skills and professionalism while working with scholars, parents, and staff members. The registered nurse will supervise additional health office staff.
- Treat minor and emergent injuries and illnesses.
- Ability to remain focused in the event of emergency with scholars or staff.
- Provide emergency care as needed to stabilize the severely ill or injured scholar or staff until parent/guardians or EMS arrives.
- Perform basic first aid and CPR as needed.
- Assess and treat scholars with acute and chronic illnesses.
- Create and maintain IHP's.
- Attend 504 and IEP meetings for scholars with noted health concerns.
- Maintain certification for vision and hearing screening and SSMP certification.
- Identify underlying health conditions by screening the scholars and determining abnormalities of the scholar's health status.
- Review and implement Health Care Plans for Allergy, Asthma, Seizure, and Migraine diagnoses.
- Contact parents as needed for illness and injuries.
- Educate scholars on hygiene and safety practices.
- Maintain student medication administration and documents according to the Medication Guidelines.
- Dispense daily medications and OTC meds as per provider/parent instruction.
- Possess basic math skills to ensure proper dosage amounts when dispensing medications.
- Maintain complete, comprehensive, and thorough documentation.
- Ability to demonstrate calm, caring demeanor while working with scholars.
- Possess good presentation skills for training school staff.
- Keep the health office clean, organized, and quiet, along with ordering supplies as needed.
- Compile and maintain all updated immunization records, hearing and vision screenings and ASIR cards. File state report by November 15th.
- Delegate tasks when appropriate to Health Assistant/UAP.
- Provide guidance and supervision to the Health Assistant/UAP.
- Communicate to the Director of Nursing and Headmaster any pertinent information accumulated in the process of carrying out duties and keep this information current.
- Supervise the prevention and control of communicable disease, conferring with Headmasters, parents, teachers, and students, interpreting regulations on exclusion, and reporting disease to the Headmaster and Director of Nursing.
- Complete the accident reports on all accidents on the GH's Landing page.
- Recognize and report possible physical, sexual, and/or psychological abuse of students. Review the Child Find mandates on a yearly basis. New faculty will be required to attend a Child Find In-service.
- Maintain confidentiality of all student health information in accordance with FERPA and HIPAA.
- Wear a name badge with the title of Registered Nurse (RN) clearly visible as required by the AZBN.
- Support or consult on staff health for workplace injuries and redirect as needed.
- Requires but is not limited to standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, squatting, and reaching. May be required to move or position equipment up to 50 pounds approximately.
- Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program.
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license from the Arizona Board of Nursing.
- Current CPR Certification.
- Department of Public Safety fingerprint clearance and background check.
- Obtain certification and conduct hearing and vision screenings per ADHS guidelines.
- Obtain SSMP certification and train staff on use of Epinephrine, Albuterol and Narcan for emergency use.
- Valid RN License in the operating state.
- Current CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification.
- Experience in school nursing is highly recommended but not required.
- Obtain certification and conduct hearing and vision screenings per ADHS guidelines.
