Overview
Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner works as a member of an inter‑professional team to deliver efficient, high‑quality, cost‑effective care in the outpatient clinic, telehealth, and occupational medicine settings. The role is supervised by a Medical Director and operates within a collaborative practice model under licensing and credentialing privileges.
Responsibilities- Obtain patient history, conduct physical examinations, and perform assessments using clinical interview, observation, and physical examination.
- Order and interpret diagnostic testing, including radiology, point‑of‑care testing, laboratory work, and electrocardiograms.
- Provide direct patient care and management of health conditions, using prescriptive authority or referral to other healthcare providers as needed.
- Perform minor procedures such as laceration repair, incision and drainage of abscesses, and other age‑appropriate interventions.
- Educate patients, families, staff, and the community on health topics and preventive care.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, staff development, and continuing education activities.
- Assume responsibility for professional development and maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of medical policies and protocols.
- Adapt communication and care approach to suit diverse patient populations, respecting privacy and cultural considerations.
- Education
- Nurse Practitioner – Master’s degree in Nursing (required).
- Physician Assistant – Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Medicine or Health Sciences, or completion of an approved Physician Assistant Training Program (required).
- Work Experience
- None (required).
- Preferred: 3 years of related working experience.
- Certifications
- Nurse Practitioner – Current license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of practice;
Certification as Family, Adult/Geriatric, or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (ANCC or AANPCP, whichever applies). Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association. Eligibility for prescriptive authority per state board. - Physician Assistant – Current license in the state of practice and National Commission for Certifying Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification. BCLS and ACLS certification. Eligibility for prescriptive authority per state board.
- Nurse Practitioner – Current license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of practice;
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Computer skills required for data entry and information retrieval.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with ability to present information clearly.
- Proficiency with Windows‑style applications, specific software packages, and keyboard use.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently.
- Knowledge of Advanced Practice Provider policies and protocols at departmental, campus, and system levels.
- Reliable transportation and willingness to travel between facilities.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
The role requires moderate physical activity, including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and frequent lifting of 10–25 pounds. Tasks involve standing, walking, and maintaining a production pace that may include pushing and pulling materials. Exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, communicable diseases, hazardous medications, and hazardous waste is inherent in patient care settings.
