LUMCON, a program of the Board of Regents, is a statewide academic endeavor to strengthen the foundational marine science needed to address Louisiana and national challenges. Anchored by a first‑rate marine laboratory, the DeFelice Marine Center, LUMCON operates a world‑class fleet of research vessels and has recently expanded through a maritime research and outreach facility in Houma.
Position OverviewWe are accepting applications for an Ordinary Seaman. The Ordinary Seaman operates under general supervision of the ship’s captain and performs various functions related to vessel operation, maintenance, waterfront upkeep, field work, and associated lab research projects.
Minimum Qualifications- Education/
Experience:- High school graduate
- Three years of experience in vessel operations
- Ability to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment as needed
- Must pass drug and alcohol screening tests as mandated by Department of Transportation regulations
- USCG Documentation as an Ordinary Seaman
- Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties, including heavy lifting and exposure to inclement weather for prolonged periods of time.
- Courses or degree in Marine Science or a related field.
- Assist the Captain/First Mate in vessel operation – cargo handling and storage, handling lines, docking and undocking, use of deck machinery (winches, cranes, davits), checking water integrity and machinery operation, launching and operating the ship’s small vessel.
- Perform vessel maintenance activities, including deck and equipment repairs; cleaning, painting, lubricating deck machinery, blocks, tackle, and other painted surfaces; making periodic equipment checks.
- Carry out cleaning and sanitation duties, including laundry and garbage removal.
- Perform waterfront maintenance tasks such as dock cleaning and upkeep.
- Assist in fieldwork sampling activities, including oceanographic research and repair of sampling equipment.
- Participate in ongoing research projects as required.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
