Position Summary
The Captain serves as the commanding officer of an assigned Uniform Patrol Substation and is responsible for providing strategic leadership, operational oversight, and personnel management to ensure the effective delivery of law enforcement services throughout the assigned area. This position directs daily patrol operations, develops supervisory staff, ensures compliance with Sheriff's Office policies and applicable laws, and fosters positive relationships with the community while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and public safety.
Essential Functions
• Direct, coordinate, and oversee all operations of an assigned Uniform Patrol Substation.
• Provide leadership, supervision, coaching, mentoring, and performance management for subordinate supervisors and deputies.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, as well as Sheriff's Office policies, procedures, and operational standards.
• Review and approve reports, probable cause affidavits, warrants, and other official documentation prepared by subordinate personnel.
• Evaluate complaints involving personnel and initiate or recommend appropriate investigative or corrective action.
• Monitor staffing levels, approve work schedules, leave requests, and timekeeping records to maintain operational readiness.
• Coordinate and facilitate required training to ensure personnel remain qualified and mission ready.
• Respond to critical incidents, major crime scenes, officer-involved events, and other significant emergencies to provide command oversight.
• Collaborate with Sheriff's Office divisions and outside law enforcement agencies during investigations and special operations.
• Analyze operational data and prepare reports, presentations, and updates for executive leadership.
• Represent the Sheriff's Office at community meetings, public events, and stakeholder engagements.
• Manage special projects and perform additional duties as assigned by the Sheriff or designee.
Minimum Qualifications
• Current rank of Lieutenant with a minimum of ten (10) years of continuous Criminal Operations experience.
• At least two (2) years of Criminal Operations experience assigned to a Uniform Patrol Substation.
• Louisiana P.O.S.T. Certification and current firearms qualification.
• Demonstrated leadership, decision-making, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively engage employees, community members, and partner agencies.
• Ability to serve in an on-call capacity 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
• Ability to perform the physical requirements necessary for law enforcement operations, including responding to emergency situations over varied terrain.
Preferred Qualifications
• Demonstrated success supervising first-line supervisors and leading large operational teams.
• Experience managing critical incidents, complex investigations, and multi-agency operations.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and public relations skills.
• Proven ability to mentor future leaders while promoting accountability and organizational excellence.
Selection Criteria
Candidates must:
• Have no disciplinary suspensions within the previous twelve (12) months.
• Meet all promotional requirements established by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office.
• Successfully complete any required interview, assessment, or promotional process. Other disciplinary or corrective actions may be considered as part of the overall selection process.
