Job Summary:
The Boiler Technician Apprentice supports the maintenance, inspection, and repair of steam and heating systems at VA hospitals and other government facilities. Working under direct supervision, the apprentice assists with low- and high-pressure steam boilers, electric steam boilers, and hot-water heating systems. The role is designed to develop the technical skills, safety knowledge, and regulatory awareness required to progress toward Class “B” Boiler Technician status within approximately two years through structured on-the-job training and mentoring.
Because project locations are situated in different areas of the country, regular travel is required. There is also the opportunity for cross-training in HVAC, chillers, mechanical systems, and emergency power generators to support broader service capabilities.

- Assist with routine service and preventive maintenance under national service contracts at VA and other government facilities.
- Assist in preparing boilers for annual internal inspections conducted by certified National Board inspectors.
- Assist in preparing deaerators for six-year internal nondestructive examination (NDE) inspections.
- Learn and apply basic boiler and burner operation principles to work safely around gas-fired equipment.
- Develop foundational electrical skills necessary for safe work around electrical systems and controls.
- Acquire basic piping skills to support safe repairs on steam, condensate, fuel, and water piping systems.
- Complete all required OSHA and site-specific safety training.
- Follow direction from licensed or certified technicians and adhere to established work practices and safety protocols.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed and parts used as directed.
- Support compliance with applicable codes, standards, and VHA directives related to boiler plant operations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Ability to communicate clearly and report work status and issues effectively.
- Good physical condition, stamina, and willingness to perform hands‑on mechanical work.
- Ability to work productively under direct supervision and follow detailed instructions.
- Strong focus on safety, organization, and attention to detail.
- Willingness and aptitude to learn boiler systems, processes, electrical circuits, and piping practices.
- Ability to read and follow blueprints, technical drawings, and maintenance/operation manuals.
- Solid basic math and problem‑solving skills.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.
- Knowledge of, or demonstrated interest in learning, VHA directives related to boiler plant operations and the VHA Boiler Plant Safety Device Testing Manual (8th Edition) is favorable.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Technical or vocational training in mechanical systems, HVAC, or industrial maintenance preferred.
- Prior hands‑on experience with industrial boilers or mechanical systems preferred.
- Prior military experience preferred.
- Familiarity with VHA boiler safety standards and the 8th Edition Boiler Manual is highly desirable.
- Medium to heavy physical demands, including the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 100 pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently.
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, bending, and working in confined spaces.
- Good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina for extended periods of physical work.
- Adequate visual acuity and hearing to perform the essential functions of the position safely.
- Travel to various project sites is required.
- Work is performed in mechanical rooms, boiler plants, healthcare facilities, and construction or renovation sites.
- Exposure to noise, heat, dust, steam, and operating machinery is common.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times while on site.
