Mobile Equipment Operator , Or Heavy

About This Position

The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This position is located in District 61/Unit 580 of the Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and reports directly to the Highway Foreman 1. The incumbent must be self‑motivated and able to perform duties with minimal supervision, interpret unforeseen conditions, and participate in structured training programs.

Job responsibilities require a Class A CDL license, working knowledge of PDAs, light computer work, possible nighttime operations, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

No experience or training is required.

• Perform maintenance tasks on DOTD right‑of‑ways including loading/unloading materials, removing fallen trees, debris after storms, dead animals, cleaning culverts, grading ditches, sweeping highways, and clearing shoulders.
• Haul maintenance materials such as asphalt, cold‑planed asphalt, dirt, sand, gravel, trash, fallen trees, and removed concrete.
• Operate small motorized equipment such as chainsaws and pole saws for cutting fallen trees and low hanging limbs.
• Provide guidance to and oversee work of lower‑level operators, act as a lead worker, and complete daily work reports for the crew in the foreman’s absence.
• Perform other duties as necessary, including emergency/disaster support activities.

• MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1 – Valid Louisiana driver’s license required. Starting salary $16.06 per hour with an additional $1.00 per hour for all hours worked. 10% base pay increase upon attainment of permanent status.
• MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 2 – Class A CDL required. Starting salary $17.18 per hour with an additional $1.00 per hour for all hours worked. 10% base pay increase upon attainment of permanent status.
• MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1/HEAVY – Class A CDL required. Starting salary $21.05 per hour.
