About This Job
The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This location is District 04/Unit 510 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Highway Foreman. The incumbent must be self‑motivated, able to work with minimal supervision, and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise.
The person will participate in DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.
No experience or training is required.
Job Duties- Operate heavy equipment, as needed. Equipment usage is determined both by seasonal conditions and by the nature of the project.
- Interpret data contained in various operator’s manuals to ensure limits and capabilities of the equipment operated are not exceeded. Perform minor repairs, services, and cleaning of equipment in accordance with the operator manual and manufacturer’s recommendations to keep equipment operating safely and efficiently.
- May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
- Prior to equipment operation, conduct a routine visual/physical safety inspection of equipment and report problems to supervisor or appropriate personnel or take necessary corrective action whenever possible.

MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1: Class D, Chauffeur’s License required upon appointment. Starting salary is $16.06/hourly; this job title receives premium pay of $1.00/hour for every hour worked. Additional 10% base pay increase upon attainment of permanent status.
Mobile Equipment Operator 2: Class A, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required upon appointment. Starting salary is $17.18/hourly; this job title receives premium pay of $1.00/hour for every hour worked. Additional 10% base pay increase upon attainment of permanent status.
MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1/HEAVY: Class A, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required upon appointment. Starting salary is $21.05/hourly.
