Position: 2026-2027 School Year: Science Teacher

The Michigan Youth Challenge Academy is a non-traditional program offering at-risk males and females ages 15 1/2 through 18an opportunity to graduate high school and realize positive life changes through an intensive five and a half month residential and 12-month post-residential program. Operated by the National Guard with educational services from Marshall Public Schools, the Academy runs two cycles annually, beginning in mid-January and mid-July.

SUMMARY:

The Science teacher is responsible for the planning instruction and/or adoption of the education program to enable students to benefit from educational experiences. The teacher’s role is to develop in each student an awareness of the role of science; to motivate each student to acquire knowledge of scientific facts and principles; to develop skills in scientific methods of problem solving; and to discover and develop special talents of students in scientific fields.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or higher
  • Valid Michigan elementary or secondary teaching certificate
  • Endorsement in Science (DX) or Integrated Science (DI)
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Build trust and confidence with students
  • Teach district approved curriculum
  • Teach skills, knowledge and scientific attitudes through courses of specific science content area as assigned to students, utilizing courses of study and course/grade level expectations adopted by the Board of Education
  • Develop lesson plans, instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students
  • Instruct students in proper use, care and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment and/or plant and animal life
  • Provide for safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment and tools; make minor adjustments and request repairs to equipment as required
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly and productive classroom environment
  • Evaluate student progress in scientific knowledge and skills; report progress on appropriate minimal skill and team reporting forms
  • Assist in the selection and requisition of books, instructional aids, science equipment, chemicals, supplies and maintain required inventory records
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities
  • Participate in curriculum development programs and in faculty committees
  • Maintain discipline in and out of the classroom
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the district's mission, vision and strategic priorities and actively works to advance them through daily practice and professional conduct
  • Contribute to the culture and climate of the district by modeling its core values, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment and serving as a committed representative of the district's identity and purpose in all interactions with students, families, staff and the broader community
  • Read and be familiar with the School Student Handbook and Policy Manual of Marshall Public Schools; strict compliance with all rules, regulations and policies is required
  • Meet all contractual obligations as outlined in the Marshall Teachers’ Association Master Agreement
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents
  • Perform other related duties that may be assigned by the building principal

Per Marshall Teachers Association Contract(BA or MA)
