The Director of Nursing (DON) coordinates and supervises the facility’s nursing staff. The role ensures a safe and therapeutic environment, provides direct client care, administers resident medications, and coordinates outside diagnostic or medical services as ordered by physicians. The DON also serves as the Infection Control Designee.
Position Responsibilities- Provide leadership and supervision to the nursing team, including hiring, training, coaching, and performance management.
- Able to assess suicide/homicide risk and create clinically appropriate interventions.
- Identify abuse/neglect in the client population.
- Document timely, thorough, and confidentially in the required format, outlining plan of care/therapy issues, assessments, and safety issues.
- Chart vitals, daily assessments, group notes, shift notes, and enter physician orders.
- Complete comprehensive nursing assessments and aid in developing treatment plans.
- Perform physical assessments, including vital signs and recognize client distress.
- Administer medications, provide education to clients and families, and complete medication orders/refills per physician orders.
- Manage medication charting, accounting, and training for all nursing staff.
- Secure medication storage and ensure only authorized individuals have access.
- Ensure all admission/discharge nursing duties are performed and documented within required time frames.
- Document assessment of abnormal involuntary movements (AIMS) in clients receiving antipsychotic medications.
- Work closely with vendors and contractors (pharmacy, lab, biohazard pick‑up, etc.) to ensure proper communication and procedures.
- Manage biohazards and maintain biohazard accounts and procedures.
- Oversee daily vital signs/glucose monitoring of clients.
- Report medical issues to the Nurse Practitioner as needed.
- Perform medication distribution and documentation.
- Order medications and ensure proper pharmacy delivery.
- Work with insurance companies on patient medications, complete insurance forms, and call as needed.
- Perform blood draws and follow up on lab values.
- Maintain medical supply inventory and place orders as needed.
- Coordinate external client medical appointments with team members.
- Ensure effective communication between medical/nursing staff, medical vendors, and C.N.A./Behavioral Technician team.
- Work closely with registered dietitians on client weight restoration needs/issues.
- Monitor all labs/EKGs/tests and communicate results with medical providers.
- Oversee all pharmacy paperwork and forms, including controlled substances.
