Job Overview

Under general supervision from the unit manager and/or director, the unit coordinator serves as a leader and clinical liaison with staff, physicians, and management. Responsibilities include staff hiring, orientation, performance evaluation, staffing, budgeting, and ensuring a safe, high‑quality environment. The role also includes serving as the contact for internal and external customers and managing day‑to‑day unit operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead unit operations, providing continuity of leadership and a team environment.
  • Assist with hiring, orientation, performance monitoring, employee counseling, staffing, payroll, and budgeting.
  • Maintain a safe environment of care and meet all quality standards.
  • Serve as clinical expert, mentor, coach, and resource for staff.
  • Coordinate staffing schedules, adjust staffing based on volume changes, and approve/deny PTO.
  • Facilitate audits for accreditation, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards.
  • Act as first responder for clinical and service recovery issues.
  • Communicate staff performance issues and participate in discipline processes with management.
  • Participate in recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel.
  • Support innovation, teamwork, and shared governance meetings.
  • Assist with budgeting and help the department achieve its budget goals.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and assist in assessing impacts to the organization.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical experience;
    Master’s degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing with the State of Michigan.
  • Advanced Nursing certifications preferred (e.g., ACLS, BLS, PALS); department‑specific certifications as required.
  • Previous management experience preferred; formal or informal leadership experience preferred.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to resolve conflict, work as a team leader, and work independently with accountability.
  • Proficiency in relevant software (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Visio).
  • Ability to organize and analyze data; fluent in spoken and written English.
