Under general supervision and in accordance with the policies, procedures and guidelines established within the organization, the registered nurse manages the care delivery for patients throughout the length of stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge. Responsibilities include utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, diagnosing, implementation and evaluation; coordinating care provided by other professionals; delegating selected acts, tasks or functions within the scope of practice;
providing selected aspects of physical care; and documenting and communicating patient responses during each tour of duty. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
- Associate’s degree in Nursing required
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred and must be obtained within eight years of hire
- Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing for the state of Michigan
- BLS certification required upon completion of core orientation
- Critical Care or ALS certification may be required for some RNs, unit specific
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification through PQF or NCC required within six months of completing intermediate fetal monitoring for Labor & Delivery & Mother/Baby/Antepartum units
- Collect comprehensive data pertinent to patients’ health.
- Assess patients’ physical and developmental needs.
- Analyze assessment data to identify appropriate patient needs.
- Document nursing history and age‑appropriate physical/emotional needs, strengths for assigned patients.
- Review vital signs to assess condition of patient and detect deviations from normal.
- Identify patient problems or issues based on assessment data.
- Confirm problems with patients and families when appropriate.
- Document expected outcomes and plan of care using clinical pathways and outcome teaching records.
- Coordinate discharge planning for outcomes not achieved utilizing continuity of care resources.
- Develop a plan prescribing interventions to attain expected outcomes.
- Incorporate clinical pathways into the plan when appropriate.
- Develop individualized interventions with patient input when appropriate.
- Consider data from other healthcare team members when developing the plan of care.
- Implement the identified plan and appropriate interventions.
- Administer prescribed medication and treatment in accordance with approved nursing techniques and policies.
- Utilize evidence‑based interventions specific to the patient’s plan.
- Maintain awareness of comfort and safety needs of the patient.
- Initiate a patient education plan according to individualized needs and coordinate its implementation.
- Manage the care plan for patients by organizing and delegating patient care interventions.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of care given by self and others.
- Evaluate progress toward attainment of expected outcomes.
- Document patient response toward expected outcomes.
- Systematically evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.
- Participate in quality improvement activities and use their results to initiate changes in nursing practice.
- Attain knowledge and competency reflective of current nursing practice.
- Participate in ongoing educational activities related to professional knowledge.
- Maintain professional records evidencing competency and ongoing education.
