Overview

Bronson Battle Creek Critical Care Unit (CCU) is a 20-bed unit specializing in life-threatening conditions and a multidisciplinary approach with state-of-the-art equipment. The unit includes the Progressive Care Unit, serving as an intermediary step between ICU and the med/surg floor.

Under general supervision and in accordance with organizational policies, the unit, and the Michigan Public Health Code, the registered nurse manages care delivery for patients during the length of stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge. This includes the nursing process (assessment, planning, diagnosing, implementation, evaluation); coordinating care with other professionals; delegating appropriate tasks to patient care assistants and universal service assistants;

providing selected physical care within the scope of professional nursing practice; and documenting patient responses, resource use, and anticipated needs at each shift. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Nursing required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred; must obtain within 8 years of hire
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing for the State of Michigan
  • As of December 29, 2013, nurses not holding a BSN must obtain it within 8 years of hire; employment may be terminated if not achieved
  • BLS certification required by completion of core orientation
  • Critical care or ALS is required for some RNs, unit specific
  • RNs in Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby/Antepartum at BMH & BBC:
    Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification through PQF or NCC required within 6 months of completing intermediate fetal monitoring

Responsibilities
  • Read, interpret, and analyze data from computer systems and equipment to set an appropriate plan of action
  • Communicate effectively verbally, in writing, and electronically
  • Provide care with attention to safety and patient comfort; manage tasks with attention to acuity and complexity
Standards of Practice
  • The registered nurse collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient’s health or the situation; assesses needs and develops a plan of care
  • Analyzes assessment data to identify patient problems; communicates with patient and family as appropriate
  • Documents nursing history and age-appropriate physical/emotional needs; reviews vital signs to assess patient condition
  • Develops and implements an individualized plan of care; coordinates discharge planning when outcomes are not achieved
  • Implements interventions, administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing techniques and policies
  • Evaluates progress toward expected outcomes and documents patient responses
  • Participates in quality improvement activities and ongoing educational activities to maintain competency
  • Collaborates with patient, family, and multiple health disciplines to effect positive outcomes
  • Delivers care ethically, preserving patient autonomy, dignity, confidentiality and rights
  • Integrates research findings into practice and uses evidence-based practice to inform policies and standards
  • Considers safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in planning and delivering nursing services
  • Provides leadership in the professional practice setting and supports a healthy work environment
Scrub RN Responsibilities (where applicable)
  • Interprets procedure cards and assesses case carts for supplies; identifies missing equipment and arranges supplies
  • Anticipates physicians’ needs and ensures proper equipment and positioning devices are available
  • Monitors patient condition and updates case information as needed
  • Maintains proper use of equipment and supports surgical team needs
  • May perform scrub duties in multiple services (e.g., neuro and ortho); able to perform spinal fusions
  • Assigned on-call responsibilities on a rotational basis
Bronson Lakeview & Bronson South Haven Hospitals

The RN is responsible for completing the Workday CBL – “Swing beds”; this is an annual CBL describing differences between swing bed patients and other patient types, and care documentation requirements.

HDU Department

Additional on-call requirements above and beyond regular scheduled hours.
